Loesch live to tell his tale in his memoir aptly titled Brain Injury (AuthorHouse, 2015). The TBI survivor had worked on his book for years, adding more pages and striving to paint as accurate of a picture as possible of his injury. The author is frank about his ordeal. “My injury was very profound it changed my whole outlook on…
In a world full of stereotypes, the worst one possible for most people is autism. Being labeled autistic usually means that people think of the subject as a savage animal that should be euthanized at worst and an illiterate idiot who can’t even feed themselves at best. People want to get rid of autism altogether, with that label as part of the reason why. However, like Temple says “people are always looking for the single magic bullet that will totally change everything. There is no single magic bullet.”…
A concussion is a serious brain injury that is caused by a hit to the body or head that shakes the brain. A concussion can cause cuts or bruises to the head and face but there are no visible signs of a concussion. Some people think getting concussions you have to pass out, but people can get concussions by not passing out. Obvious signs of a concussion is passing out or fainting and forgetting what happened right before the injury. In cases of severe concussions it lasts longer than normal concussions and it can affect how you speak, move and learn.…
In order to reduce brain trauma as a result of a violent collision within the NFL, a new sideline concussion test has been set in place. Through tests like these that analyze brain trauma more closely, brain trauma within the NFL may be significantly reduced. That said, the current steps taken by the NFL to control the violent collisions that produce brain trauma is not enough because football is a high contact sport where injuries are continuous. High contact sports like this constantly expose players to many injuries which can cause damage to the brain – an example of this being concussions. Due to the high exposure of injuries in football, brain trauma can start before one joins the NFL, as stated in the article “The Damage Done”.…
Describe the two types of injuries that can lead to Traumatic Brain Injury. There are two different types of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). One type of a TBI is called an open head injury. An open head injury is caused when the skull is punctured. Not all of open head injuries are fatal.…
Depending on the part of the brain affected and the severity of the injury, the result on any one individual can vary greatly. Personality changes, memory and judgement deficits, lack of impulse control, and poor concentration are all common. Behavioral changes can be stressful for families and caregivers who must learn to adapt their communication techniques, established relationships, and expectations of what the impaired person can or cannot do. New sensitivities can also be very challenging and baffling for the injured person and their loved…
Concussions and other forms of traumatic head injuries have become a serious problem in high school, collegiate, and professional athletics. Over the years, many young athletes have suffered a concussion, which can, in turn, have a long term effect on the athlete’s mind. A concussion can occur from any type of contact to the head or neck area resulting in a small leisure on the brain. Although this injury is physically small, a bruise on the brain is a significant injury and should be treated as such. Many people fail to realize the seriousness of head injuries and the long-term effects that are associated with them.…
Concussion and head injury prevention have become a huge part of modern helmets. Additionally, ideas that were once thought back in the earlier time periods are no longer allowed (single face bar). Also, certain aspects are required at all times: the helmet, the full facemask, and the chin straps. Combine these changes in helmets, with the changes in rules, and the way tackling is taught, the NFL and football in general is in the right direction towards safety. However, as mentioned, concussion rate is increasing.…
In the self-composed drama, “Concussion”, Will Smith is Dr. Bennett Omalu, a Nigerian forensic pathologist who discovers a disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is commonly associated to football players who were exposed to recurrent violent blows to the head, depending on their position in the field. While working at the Pittsburgh coroner's office, Dr. Bennett comes across the dead body of the former Pittsburgh Steelers center, Mike Webster, who died miserably in his pick-up truck after years complaining about painful headaches and forgetfulness. Intrigued by the scans of Webster’s brain, the very qualified and respectful doctor requires additional expensive exams, even if he has to pay out of his pocket, in order to…
Athletes should have to wait longer until the doctor has cleared the athlete to safely perform in their sport again after a brain injury has occurred. These athletes should have to wait longer because head trauma can lead to long term effects of the brain and could possibly be deadly if a second concussion occurs before the first concussion has cleared. As I earlier stated, brain trauma can lead to long term affects of the Brain depending on how bad the trauma is. Some athletes are released to start competing after a concussion with out waiting enough time or so to say to soon in some cases. Some people believe that it is safe for an athlete to start competing shortly after a concussion.…
Athletic children look up to athletes for seemingly natural mental and physical resilience, and achievements. However, contrary to popular belief, contact sport players are not moving indestructible walls or robots programmed to just win a game; they are human just like anyone else and are susceptible to injury. Football is one of the most popular contact sports and has a strong focus on head on collisions and aggression on the field, consequently, it has a strong link to the posthumous diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (C.T.E.) in former players. To protect players and practicing fans there needs to be a stronger focus on educating players on the long term health risks of playing football and other contact sports to supplement…
West stressed the importance of planning health and education rehabilitation for children and young people who have recently acquired a severe brain injury is complex and multifactor. He initiated the School Function Assessment (SFA) which was selected as the only available tool that measured a wide range of activities, and has been shown to be valid and reliable in measuring functional school based tasks. The SFA was standardized on 363 students with a range of disabilities including traumatic injury. West believed the SFA was not sensitive enough to record the very subtle changes made by some pupil. West argues that despite the limitations of the numerous agencies, the SFA was found to be a valuable tool for monitoring outcomes both at the…

Introduction Approximately 1.7 million people acquire a traumatic brain injury in the United States every year, impacting millions of people’s daily lives (Powell, Rich, & Wise, 2016). A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external or internal force impacts the brain, which causes physical and chemical alterations in the brain. In recent years, rates of TBI have increased dramatically; however, more people are receiving treatment after a TBI, so mortality rates are decreasing (“Rates of TBI-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths,” 2016). According to Andriessen et al. (2011), the leading cause of a TBI is motor vehicle accidents, followed by falls, assaults, and sports.…
