HOW TO ASSESS AND CARE FOR TRAUMA PATIENTS
Introduction: Trauma nursing can be very scary, if you don’t know what you are doing, with this set of instructions I will allow you to gain confidence in your emergency nursing practice which enable you to be better prepared in a trauma situation. For documentation of these steps please follow your facilities guide lines, but there is an example of a trauma documentation flow sheet on the final page of these instructions. This is basic information and steps that you need to know while assessing and caring for trauma patients. Always remember stay calm and remember your ABCs!
Step 1: Get report from EMS: From this report we will get a basic understand on what’s going on with a patient this report will be from a paramedic or flight nurse and will most likely include how the patient will be getting to …show more content…
Patients often have several family members in the waiting room wanting information, along with the physician, it is your job to keep the family informed and answer any questions they are having about their love one.
Step 8: Assess the need for transfer: You should be looking at the long term outcome for this trauma patient. Does your current facility have the capabilities to care for this trauma patient? Will they need services or specialist that your facility doesn’t provide? If the answer is yes, you should be looking at transferring the patient to another facility, so that they are able to get the best care possible.
Step 9: Move the patient out of the Emergency Room: Regardless of whether you decided this patient should be transferred out of the hospital or if they are able to go to the ICU in your facility, they need to move out of the emergency room. It is critical that these patients are stabilized and moved to the appropriate place, the emergency room has to make room for the next trauma patient that comes in the
