A. Assess the impact of physical trauma on the children and family.

i. What are the short-term impacts of this trauma?

Some short-term impacts of trauma can manifest themselves in behavioral reactions. Some of these reactions include development of new fears separation anxiety (particularly in young children), sleep disturbance, nightmares, sadness, loss of interest in normal activities, reduced concentration, decline in school work, anger, somatic complaints and irritability (Children and Trauma, 2008). For Eloni, his behavior has become aggressive and abusive to his sibling as well as other students. Because of his aggressive behavior his family is also being evicted and he was subsequently placed

The parents need parenting classes to learn how to “parent” children of abuse. The family is also in need of intervention to prevent or help them from eviction stemming from Eloni’s aggressive behavior. ii. How are the needs different for short-and long-term trauma?
The short term addressing Eloni’s current behavior towards his classmate and brother is important to avoid it escalating. Addressing the families living situation needs to be remedied immediately so that they have somewhere to live reducing the stress level for the mother. iii. How are the similar?
The needs must be met from both short-term and long-term. Everything from counseling to housing work to keep the family functioning. Without housing the mother cannot regain custody of Eloni. Without counseling both boys will suffer in the present and future.

How do these relate to the specific issue in the case? Since Anamalia does not know how to address her son’s behavioral issues it has placed her family in the position to be evicted including the fact that she does not have a job to help pay the rent. She can apply for financial help and she does have strong ties to her Pacific Islander community so they may be able to help. Since Eloni was abused by his stepfather he is acting out with violence and abusing drugs to help cope with the trauma. iii. How do these relate to the age of the clients?
Anamalia has the experience of being an adult and acquiring coping skills because she is older. Eloni is at a complex age of 13 where is just beginning his adolescent years where hormones dictate behaviors. Kolomalu is only 4, this is the age where he is most
