Trash Observation

This activity displayed how we at Mid Pacific distribute our trash. In order to find this information we took trash from our cafeteria and saw what students thought should go in the trash can because not everything you throw away is actually trash. I learned a lot about waste and how a lot of people do not throw it away properly. What shocked me the most was that so many people threw their plastic bottles in the trash can. At our school you are able to leave the bottle on top of the trash can and it will be taken later to the recycling bin. It really isn't that difficult and that is what makes it so confusing that some people would rather throw their recyclables in the trash then leave it on the trash can. Secondly was the amount of food wasted. The percentage of food wasted in America is 40% of all food, that amount seemed to immense and I wasn't sure I believed that it was true. But, looking at all the food in the trash can that amount seemed to be around the right number but a little less than that which was a good thing to see. However, even the leftover food can have another purpose, it can be used for fertilizer after it decomposes and as slop or food for certain animals. That is one of the interesting I learned, that truly their are so many things that go into the trash that has another purpose.
Lastly was the amount of styrofoam

It would be interesting to see the difference and see the process of what goes on at the waste plant. Do they organize the trash from real to recyclable. Do they throw the trash on the ground and just let it sit. Along with if they burn trash to reduce the space it takes up. Those are just a few questions I have about the plant. I thought that it was an interesting activity that made me step out and learn about trash first hand, from the trash cans at our

“Recycling aluminum cans, for […] saves […] 96% of the energy needed to produce aluminum from bauxite”(Humes 260). In order to reverse our slothful minds, it is essential to think bigger picture. It is most certainly true that changing our wastefulness at first may be a challenge. At times it may seem like we are going out of our way. I like to compare it to eating organically, some may say organic groceries are far too expensive; though this may be true, it is worth it because it’s a life investment.…

How Society Influences Just imagine all the amazing stuff you could find in other people’s trash. Dumpster Diving is something homeless people do when they want to find food, clothing, and anything else they could use to their advantage. Dumpster diving gave me a horrible impression. I couldn’t contribute to the idea of someone, much less myself, digging or scrounging in another’s dumpster out in the open, touching food and material that could easily lead to deadly diseases. At first, I saw dumpster diving as a disgusting and unsanitary activity, something no one should ever attempt.…

In Peter Singer’s The Good Life he mentions that “the brain is a tool for reasoning, and a capacity to reason helps us to survive, to feed ourselves, and to safeguard our children.” (264) As college students make the transition from home life to living at a university, they lose the safety provided by their parents as well as certain amenities, such as home-cooked meals. In order to help these new “adults” manage this transitory period, most universities require students to live in on-campus housing and purchase meal plans.…

During this year’s football games, fans would leave bottles and trash all over the bleachers. A friend and I saw that an organization called, “Keep Brownsville Beautiful” wanted volunteers to pick up bottles we tried to encourage and told all our friends who needed community hours to come pick up plastic bottles. We made it a sort of fun gathering and about six to twelve friends would help out at least every home game. Cleaning up the bleachers, looking at them clean, and spending time with friends made me realize that if we can get some friends to help out we can encourage a whole club.…

Over the course of the semester, we have discussed the negative consequences resulting from the way we, as a society, dispose of our garbage. Most of our trash generally ends up in landfills where harmful chemicals are washed off exposing surrounding areas to harmful pollutants which are then able to cause extensive damage to both the environment and the species which inhabit the area. This method of waste disposal, while convenient for both major businesses and individual civilians alike, has already proven detrimental to the planet and its many species, and has called for a change in the way we manage and dispose of these toxic materials. “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” answers that call by providing a number of feasible solutions and changes we can make, not only how we discard our trash, but also how we can avoid the need to create any more.…

I also looked up the most of the seats to check if there are any soda bottles left, unfortunately, almost all people left their trash, and people did not seem to care about them. They showed no reaction to this matter as if it was just a typical norm for people to do. To be honest, I was surprised to see all the people’s reaction and their behavior. My reaction toward to this norm is definitely surprised, before I picked up this norm for my project, I had almost no idea of how people pollute the environment by simply not respecting the others work. Although, I was one of them who does not follow the norm, I obviously do not feel very good about the result because it shows that how lazy we have become that we do not carry our thrash to the door to throw.…
