Trash Epidemic In The Ocean

Improved Essays
We are two eighth grade students at Incline Middle School and we are writing to you about the trash epidemic in the ocean.
There are many different types of debris in the ocean including cigarettes, bags, caps/lids, food containers, cups, plates, utensils and many other types of debris. This can be caused by poorly managed landfill sites, sewer overflows, manufacturing sites, illegal dumping on domestic and industrial trash, and street litter.
The great pacific garbage patch is not the only garbage patch but it is the biggest one out of the five garbage patches on our Earth. 20% of all the trash comes from ships and platforms offshore the other 80% comes from the wind blowing litter and the tides picking up litter. It injures coral reefs

Based on the collection of 141 debris sites, there is, at the time this article was written, 7,000 to 35,000 tons of floating plastic debris. According to Andrés Cózar, there was less plastic that previously estimate. During the 1970's, scientists surmised there was around 1 million tons of plastic debris. Researchers think that data from tracking trash will help them learn more about how the trash affects ocean life because if they are able to track the trash, they can track how much trash the wildlife are eating. It can also help tell the scientists where the trash is, therefore, they are able to pick up some of the…

It has been estimated that 80% of the pollution load in the oceans originates from these sources (AMEC Earth & Environmental, 2003). This is of importance when looking at the fisheries sector as it's a large producer of waste; in fact, frequently in the processing of most species of fish for food purposes, typically 30-80% of the raw material is waste (AMEC Earth & Environmental, 2003). This can leave a large portion being…

Marine debris is anything from a plastic bag to an aluminum can that made the ocean or beach its home. Whether it was left by a careless beachgoer or a boat dropped it overboard accidently, it is now debris. Litter is another name for it, though that name is more commonly associated with its land counterpart, and it also affects the environment and those inhabiting it. The affects are devastating to the marine life in the oceans with animals such as sea turtles mistaking it for food or getting caught in it and being unable to free itself leading to its death. It also causes for accidental harm like gathering on the top of the water and disrupting sunlight trying to pass through…

Therefore, rubbish in the islands can lead to major problems. This research paper will discuss why littering is a problem in Hawaii, over development or protecting the land, and the…

Scattered pieces of rubbish or remains or marine debris it’s known as the most dangerous hazard for marine ecosystem due to the unawareness of humans, our rubbish goes straight to the ocean coming from mostly animal agriculture, industries and tourism (6). The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

I was oblivious to the existence of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch until this day. Upon the conclusion of my research, I feel that I am also to blame for this degrading of our ocean. It is actually mind boggling to contemplate on how one’s trash from several different continent ends up in the north pacific; nonetheless, it essentially does. I am ashamed to say that the cause of this degrading of our ocean is from the most intellectual living thing on earth—human beings. The everyday trash that we accumulate tends not to be deposed properly on some accounts; consequently, these trash ends up going through a drain in the road then into our rivers which inevitably leads to our oceans.…
