Women went through hard times between the 18th and 19th century lifestyle. The lack of inequality of women and men at that time was unfair. Women that were married had less rights in the perception of the law. The right to vote for women didn't come until the late 1920s. Careers like medicine and law were restricted to women. Women weren't able to get an education during the 1920s because no school would welcome a female in with low exceptions. People who were able to participle in church were only men. Emily and Virginia were very similar. Emily never left her house and allowed the public eye to win. She was so overwhelmed with change and how the public eye saw her that she became more mentality unstable after her father died.
