The most impactful intervention I chose to incorporate in my life is exercise, my commitment is I will either jog or do elliptical training three times a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We have discussed the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise in depth in Psychology 331 which is why I chose this intervention. In addition, I chose to use the Transtheoretical model of change (TTM) to implement my intervention, I made this decision because it seems to be most practical intervention that could have the most effective results for me as it is a fluid mythology that allows for error and regression. Additionally, there has been substantial evidence that supports the effectiveness of TTM as a motivational tool for this kind of …show more content…
Bogg (2008) Looked at the psychological proximity between the personality trait of conscientiousness, defined as a person’s ability to have impulse control, be task and goal directed, and plan ahead, within the framework of Neo-Socioanalytic theory. Boggs hypothesis is that people who are conscientious, hardworking, and norm adherent are more likely to engage in physical activity using processes of change, focus on the positive aspects of exercise, be more confident in overcoming obstacles (Bogg, 2008). At this point I have moved beyond the precontemlation stage, I have thought about the change I plan to make and have decided to make a change. Second, contemplation stage, I have, as this article demonstrates, put a lot of thought into my intervention, I understand the health benefits to exercise and acknowledge the consequences of maintaining a sedentary lifestyle. Thirdly, preparation, I have purchased running shoes, I have an elliptical, I have scheduled time to exercise, I have talked to my partner and solicited support. Now is the time for step 4 action. While I have exercised sporadically since making this commitment I have yet to consistently put my plan into action. Perhaps because I have yet to believe I really do have the time, or because I have yet to exercise counter conditioning, the replacing of a problem behavior with healthier behavior, in my case not playing my guitars until I have worked out even if I was unable to work out when I planned for legitimate reasons. Clearly stated, in order to move to the action stage of the TTB theory I need to make my personal independent variable, exercise, a top priority if I am going to make an impact on my personal dependent variable, a healthy heart and improved mental and physical
