The incredible thing about their backgrounds is the fact that are mainly women, which goes against the generic make up of screen writers as being male. The show offers a different perspective because of this, but the fact that they are still white proves that the industry needs to expand its horizons of diversity. Within the show its self, the only characters that appear the most are white women, which is a reflection of those who write television. Still, the unprecedented reality is that the show’s culture is different and offers controversial ideas about gender, and the family dynamic. Because of this, Transparent challenges its viewers to reinvent the definition of what a middle class family looks like and how it operates within this ever changing society. For example, within one of the episodes, the family gathers around to take a family picture for a wedding. The media is not a reflection of us but of what we want everyone to be. When you watch television, or movies there is always white people, and when people of color are shown in television they are over saturated caricatures that bleed out stereotypical personalities and reflect the racist attitudes within America. This enters people’s conscious whether they believe it does or not, only the third person theory is exempt from this reality. When someone is able to think critically about what they are being fed through the media are they able to protect themselves. But for those who do not think critically, they do not question, they do not have the educations to analyze what they are consuming, these are the people that cannot protect themselves from this hurt, they also perpetuate the idea of stereotypes, of this idea of white superiority.
