Transitions In Middle School

Decent Essays
It is hard to distinquish what is true from what is not. Throughout middle school and high school different teachers say different things. Throughtout my writing I have always received mixed signals. Certain things such as always having transitions and five sentences per paragraph I assumed to be true. In high school my english teacher would drop our grade down two letter grades if transitions were not included in our essay. This experience was one that stuck with me. Personally, I believe certain paragraphs can be effective without transitions. Also, I believe that not every paragraoh needs five sentences. Every paper or essay I have ever written it was declared it would not be counted without five sentence each. Following this rule was

This should not always be used as you improve as a writer, you should also redevelop your procedure for writing. “What critics of the five-paragraph model should be objecting to is not that it is a formula, but that it is a weak formula” (Birkenstein & Graft 1). This quote separates different types of methodologies and demonstrates not all formulas are impractical but, there are more advantageous methods for different situations. As a high school student, I was never a particularly strong writer, I often lacked direction and the poetic language in my works. However, what the five paragraph essay did for me what guide me as a beginner to able to write my idea in an organized manner.…

For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

Final I have always loved to write all my ideas down on paper. However, when it came to writing college level essays… well, I just wasn’t very good at organizing them to all make sense. This year in English 1010, I have learned how to incorporate transitions words into my writing. The text in “Rules for Writers” defines Transitions as words that help an essay flow from idea to idea. They help the reader better comprehend what has been read and what is about to be read (Page 64).…

This is typically scheduled for Late February or Early March. The administration discusses the freshman handbook and guidance counselors provide information about scheduling for classes. The department liaisons briefly discuss academic expectations and/or course offerings in their respective departments for freshman students.…

I spend so much time worrying about the transitions within my body paragraphs that I tend to forget about the unnecessary, additional, or redundant phrases. For example, in Writing Project 1, I said in the third body paragraph: “The surrounding design around the article is unskillful.” The “surrounding” and “around” words used in the same sentence created a redundancy that didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have with just one of these words. Word choice is another weakness that is seen in my essays, since I do not use strong vocabulary words and sometimes write sentences with vague pronouns rather than specifying with the subject that I address in the body paragraph sentences. A smaller weakness that I have with writing essays is the minor error of not formatting citations correctly in MLA, but instead having part of the source in APA.…

Five-Paragraph Construct To strengthen my misconception of the five paragraph format, I have researched information from articles and books. These sites have been an incredible way of seeing my construct in different points of views. Although I will be including an article that expresses a good feedback of this construct, I have found various facts and opinions that strongly support my misconception. Nonetheless, just because you were taught this inferior format does not mean you will show up to college and be doomed for your English class. In the past semester, I have grown as a writer holistically. Before I began my first-year English composition course, I wrote the DSP (Directed Self-Placement) test. The prompt was whether or not college is worth the investment for the current generation. When I read the instructions that the essay wouldn’t be graded, I knew I could write anything just for the sake of finishing the assignment. When I reread my DSP essay I realized the lack of effort I put into the writing.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
