How are students so determined to change for the sake of their education? The way we invest and spend our time is one of the factors in change. I learned from experience that it does matter on what you spend and invest your time on. Because I know the difference between investing and spending, I learned to become more productive. These are positive outcomes that come along with change. Growth is a change that many of us go through; factors in achieving this change are time management, determined mindset, and setbacks. Time management is one of the major factors leading to a meaningful change. As we grow older our time becomes limited due to more responsibilities. Setting realistic goals requires determination to reach them. Positive thinking also plays a role in having a determined mindset. In Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainiology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn”, she mentions that “in a growth mindset, however, you can make a plan of positive action”. When having a determined mindset staying positive is key. Thinking positively about the outcomes and process of your goals is another important factor leading to a meaningful change. Creating a step by step plan is a useful tool to use in order to reaching your goal. As Edward L. Deci mentions in his book, Why We Do What We Do: Understanding Self-Motivation, “we need to set limits and to be consistent in administering” (Deci 105). There are boundaries and limitations in each individual, setting limits should be consistent so that we do not strain ourselves. I remember when I told myself that I would start reading more books I had negative thoughts and I was discouraged. I learned that staying positive in your goals will surely help you achieve them. To have a meaningful change, setbacks will come in our way and there is no way of avoiding them. Challenges are meant to come our way, because it is how we will learn from our mistakes. By learning from mistakes you can change anything that is preventing you from moving forward. In the article “Note to Educators: Hope Required When Growing Roses in Concrete”, Jeffery M. R. Duncan- Andrade says, “as educators we must take great risks and accept great challenges”. Great risks and challenges are setbacks that many of us have probably gone through. I certainly have gone through risks and difficult challenges, but I’ve learned that running away will make it worse. We must get through these challenges as part of growth. I risked social life to study because I was having trouble with math, its not my best subject. Although I did not let this set me back from reaching my goals. Learning to deal with these challenges is a factor to a meaningful change. It is also a key concept in growth. Many factors lead to a meaningful change. It is not something that can happen within a day. There is a process and there are requirements in reaching this change. The outcomes however are phenomenal and will benefit us in our journey of growth. It is difficult for many to change due to these factors, but they are not impossible.
