Original Title: Transitioning from Camper to Counselor
Working Title: From Camper to Counselor: Growing Independence Each Year

Each program at camp is designed to make you more independent. You begin a session being guided by your counselor and learning new skills. By the end of most sessions, the roles reversed and you, the camper, are leading your counselors through activities that you have mastered. In addition to the growth you will experience every year, summer camp is also designed to help you cope with additional responsibility and freedom as you grow up, adding more choices and chances for leadership each year that you enroll in camp.

Adding Responsibility and Freedom Camp is designed to foster your independence by slowly increasing your responsibility and opportunities to take safe risks. During the first few years of camp, you will generally stay for shorter periods of time, such as 3-4 days as opposed to a whole week or a month, and while you might try several activities, they will be lead by your counselors.

You might plan your own cookout, lead your own hike, and participate in more adventurous activities such as sailing, rock climbing, or high ropes courses. However, your counselors will always be close at hand to give you advice and lead some activities. As a teenager, you will be given even more responsibility. You might lead a multiple day backpacking trip with little input from your counselors. You might host the camp talent show or create your own specialized program with other campers your age. Because camp slowly gives you more responsibility and freedom each year, you can grow confident in your skills and decision making process, which can make you a more responsible young adult, ready to take on a leadership

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

In conclusion, there are many benefits to going to summer sleep-away camp. Children learn independence, connect with nature, exercise, make life-long friends, build social skills that they will carry the rest of their lives, and so much more. Although it may seem like kids are missing a vital opportunity to spend time with their friends and family, they most likely aren't. However, in the end it's also important for parents to look at their children and consider whether this positive and life-changing opportunity is right for…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

The trip to a camping site in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest- a trip I would never forget- lead me to the discovery of myself and my transition into adulthood. This trip was through the summer camp I have attended for now eleven years; Liberty Lake Day Camp located in Columbus, New Jersey, is my second home. I grew up in this camp, and when I finally reached the age to become a L.I.T, a leader in training, I was eager to undergo the program with my friends I always attended camp with. This trip was a reward to all the hard work we do as L.I.Ts. Little did I know the annual L.I.T trip to the camping site would be life changing.…

I never could have guessed five years ago, when I walked onto the MWBC grounds that my world would change forever. I didn’t know it then, but that cozy little patch of land in the middle of nowhere would become the biggest influence in my life. I had no inkling that the people I would meet would become like a second family to me. If I had it wouldn’t have taken me so long to get there. Growing up I was very wary of summer camp.…

Whether you have a tent or a camper, camping is a wonderful way for families to work together and enjoy each other away from the stresses of work and school. You need to plan ahead and be prepared, but all the work will be worth it. You might not have electricity during the trip, but if you bring the essentials and think simply, you will not be bothered by not having some modern conveniences. Years later, you and your family will remember fondly all the time you spent around a campfire laughing, singing, and telling stories. Depending on your budget and the amount of people going camping, you have to decide what style and size of tent or camper to buy or rent.…
