Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

According to the Society of Neuroscience, bilingualism not only improves an individual's concentration ability, but might also protect the human brain against age-related diseases (Susan Perry). Peter Temes article appears to have a great deal of bias present. As the piece progresses, the bias falls away in favor of providing some interesting commentary on what bilingual education is, and why it should remain a part of the American education system. Temes brings in items that could be connected to the multiculturalism debate and he claims bilingual education “doesn’t work because it’s just a bad idea, supported only [by] ethnic blocks” (Temes 346). Temes even manages to go a step further and connects the “ethnic blocks” to a demand that has been created “for Spanish-speaking teachers and education workers” only (Temes 346). He does not elaborate about the need for teachers to be multilingual; however, he claims “that good bilingual…

Rodriguez grew up in a Spanish speaking family thriving and eager to expand his education and vocabulary in the “loud, booming with confidence” English language. According to Rodriguez, bilingual educationists have strong disbelief in the idea that schools should be assimilated with bilingual education because the students lack “a degree of ‘individuality’” This sense of individuality is absent in public society because often your heritage sets you apart from most others around you.…

Aside from the adjustment that she had to make when participating in extracurricular activities while maintaining her academic performance, there were a few things that she did when doing her work, that was different than the way we (mainstream American students) interacted with it. I will never forget her mini laptop looking translator! She used it a lot, especially in classes like biology and English, when a lot of the words that were being taught were not words frequently used amongst she and her peers. This translator helped her a lot because she was able to decode the meaning of words without having to constantly ask the people around her. She would type the word in English into the translator and in turn be given the definition of the…

In my role as the Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for San Benito County, I’m tasked with the responsibility to recruit, train, and retain an active high school poll worker database (over 150). The database is used to employ poll workers, surveyors, interpreters, and outreach volunteers. Unfortunately, there is not enough known about best practices in this area, and there is no uniformity throughout the programs. Often outreach work consists of trial and error. I’ve found over the past years that long-term relationship building with community-based organizations is the most effective approach.…

She mentioned that in the beginning of the year she made sure that the students followed instructions and worked independently. She used the technique of speaking very softly and nicely to the students. She established excellent rapport with her students. That has allowed her to work with her students as a facilitator instead of having to do much discipline to get their attention. I was able to notice that the 4th and 5th grade teachers were very disciplinary.…

Jennifer, Our campus is a bilingual campus and even though I do not teach bilingual, our team works very closely with our 3rd grade bilingual classroom collaborating and planning to ensure all students receive proper instruction. I love that our ELLs receive instruction with the direction in their native language. Being a bilingual campus allows our bilingual parents to feel more comfortable on campus as well as building relationships with the faculty and staff. What a great idea for all ELL students to have the opportunity to go to the summer program that specifically aims to enrich their English learning experience and enhance their academic literacy. Our district provides a summer nutrition program for all students but what a great idea…

This class is the most well-behaved of the three classes and seems to comprehend the material more easily than the other three classes that I observe. From my observation, the class is about sixteen males and twelve females. Of all the classes I observe they are all predominately white, with only six minority students between all three classes. This class specifically has one Hispanic student.…

The research done by Brice et.al, investigated phonological developmental processes in bilingual children, and bilingual adults. There have been many studies to support the importance of language development in the area of speech perception on both monolinguals and bilinguals and their differences in development. Although studies do exist they are not adequately representative of speech perception with bilinguals. This study will aid in the understanding of how bilinguals use two languages to perceive speech. The purpose of the research is to compare the speech perception of bilinguals in three categories, phonotactic construction, age or language, and developmental trends.…

In chapter 8 it discussed a reason why we have to teach a balanced bilingual curriculum in the classroom. The textbook “Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism” by Colin Baker expressed the cognitive theories of bilingualism and the curriculum. There are three theories that make up the cognitive theories for bilingualism; The Balance Theory, The Iceberg Analogy, and The Thresholds Theory. Within the Iceberg Analogy it broke town the 6 parts of the Common Underlying Proficiency.
