Introduction: How many people of you guys has been to the capitol?…… It is beautiful right? Yeah I've never been there(funny). When I was young I always thought of the capitol as one of the most important buildings America built. (Transition) Why? It was built by people who dedicated themselves to this country and died for it to protect our country and freedom against our enemies. Through the years the history of Washington D.C. has been plagued by destruction, wars, and hatred, but that didn't stop our fore fathers build this country and the wonderful Capitol building. After years of dispute on American sovereignty against the British, America has had enough, in response the War Hawks, who is led by Henry Clay and John Calhoun, who wanted war against Great Britain started the invasion of British held Canada leading up the War of the 1812. President James Madison asked for the support of the American people on the war against Great Britain, but his resources were finite, which is a big problem against the bigger and more powerful British Military but this didn't stop him to get the support of the American people which has had enough against the Brits. On June 18, 1812, James Madison signed the Declaration of War. The war begun when American forces invaded Upper Canada, led by General William Hull on July 12, 1812. The first battles didn't went well on the American side, Hull surrendered Detroit and US forces was humiliated on the Battle of Queenston Heights. Our great leaders throughout time have lived in the President’s Mansion or what we call now the White House, it has been through a lot but we managed to keep it and maintain it from it’s roots since it was built. Pierre Charles L’Enfant was appointed by Thomas Jefferson on creating the city plan for the capital city, but he was dismissed after not showing any plans or blueprints on how to build the city. Then Thomas Jefferson proposed a design competition on the designs of the Capitol and the President’s Mansion. An amateur architect named William Thornton won the competition and his design was approved and was the first Architect of the Capitol. The design was later modified by Benjamin Latrobe a famous British-American architect and then Charles Bulfinch. The capitols was partially burned after the British torched it in the 1814. The reconstruction began in 1815 led by George Bomford and Joseph Gardner Swift who are military
