Transition Into Adulthood

Decent Essays
I am a 37-year-old mother of two girls and a former medical assistant who is now a sociology major and an applicant of spring graduation at Union County College. I am a family oriented person and avid animal lover and so are my daughters. I enjoy spending time with my family and helping others by collecting items for needy families.
Despite having children at an early age motherhood as a teen did not mark my ability to transition into adulthood. Personally, speaking what marked my attainment into adulthood is similar excerpt for the class textbook. “For emerging adults in other cultures the range is narrow or nonexistent, as lack of education leaves them unprepared for any but the most unskilled labor”. The transition to adulthood is tough and usually changes who people are permanently. In Bless Me, Ultima, Rudolfo Anaya shows how Antonio Marez is forced to grow up due to the violence surrounding the little town he lives in and the two sided conflict in his life. Antonio’s mother wants him to be a priest while his father wants him to live the life of a wild vaquero. He is not able to find his own way to cope with all of the surrounding madness due to his family pulling him in every direction. In contrast, in Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha a young son decides on his own to go on a journey to find himself and reach Nirvana.…

The normative concept of adulthood is framed around the ideals of independence and responsibility overlapped with social practices of independent living and work (Fumanti, 2011), however when work is mixed with study the normative framework of adulthood is challenged. Firstly, transitioning into adulthood was once thought of as linear, reflecting the shift from student to worker (Andres & Wyn, 2010), however the merging of markers of adulthood, such as employment, with marker of youth, such as education, has created a non-linear trajectory of transition (Goodwin, & O'Connor, 2005). Within a single day a young person may engaged in both institutions, demonstrating a fluidity in identity and their social role that has altered how the transition…

Every single emerging adult thinks about religion. Whether one is a devout Christian or an atheist, his or her religious beliefs and opinions are contemplated as an emerging adult. The emerging adult period of life is used as an experimental time for people to develop their core beliefs. It is at this time that people form their sexual identity, political views, and of course religion (amongst many other things).…

    Coming Of Age Changes

I don’t think that coming of age changed completely since 1967 because only a small proportion of young adults finish college and know what to do in life for example getting married; people wait when they are mature and understand the mindset of what and how life works. Our generation has new challenges such as age: how kids can’t work or drink in a young age, finishing school, and marriage: like I said when people are in the adulthood phase. Bens parents are hassling him about what is he going to do next with his future, my parents are also bothering me to go to medical field and become a doctor and I really don’t want to be a doctor. But Ben and I are not similar because he made a huge mistake and pre pressure got to him which I am not a…

Emerging Adulthood is an ambiguous period in a person’s life. It is a period that most people do not know who they are as a person or know what to expect next. Throughout the first week of class we learned where the term emerging adults came from and how it became such a phenomenon in the field of Psychology. Arnett (2014) defines emerging adulthood as an age of identity exploration, instability, self-focus, feeling of in-between, and possibilities; which he called the key features of emerging adulthood. After learning about the five key features in emerging adults, there were three that stood out to be me; the age of identity exploration, instability and self-focus.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…

American author Gail Carson Levine reflected, “When you become a teenager, you step onto a bridge. The opposite shore is adulthood. Childhood lies behind.” She describes the transformations a person experiences from childhood to adulthood by the means of parties, drinking, driving, marriage, and families. These are important rites of passage everywhere, so as a result they are communicated and celebrated differently depending on the culture.…
