WHS has five different activities for students and parents to participate in as they transition from Silas Deane Middle School (SDMS) to Wethersfield High School (M. Maltese, personal communication, September 26, 2017). The first activity is an informational parent night at WHS with the high school administration, school counselors, and department liaisons. This is typically scheduled for Late February or Early March. The administration discusses the freshman handbook and guidance counselors provide information about scheduling for classes. The department liaisons briefly discuss academic expectations and/or course offerings in their respective departments for freshman students. At the end, parents can ask specific questions regarding any of these topics (T. Moore, personal communication, November 20, 2017).
The second transition activity is for eighth grade students. The high school guidance counselors travel to SDMS and discuss scheduling and electives (C. Bryan, personal communication, November 20, 2017). This occurs in April. Ahead

Creating my high school schedule, I would have to ask my friends and they would help me based on what their siblings had done. I did not always feel confident relying on my friend’s siblings, so during high school, I researched to understand my opportunities. It was confusing to hear my friends say “my mom is making me take this class, “because I never had that source of advice. My junior year I realized that there was no guidance at all at my school.…

Children thrive on routine and a change in what they consider their ‘normal day’ can have an effect on their development. Even something as moving on to another activity at school before the child has finished the first one can cause a child to act out or display challenging behaviour. The more often this type of transition is repeated, the more they get used to it and that then becomes the norm. Thus is especially important as they grown up as later in their schooling they will be expected to transition between one activity or class and the next without issues. It is always of help to a school if they are aware of any big physical transition about to occur in a child’s life, such as a new school, new parent or sibling or a bereavement, as it will allow the school to help support the pupil through the changes that are about to…

In all honesty, I did not have expectations going into the practicum. I wanted to take a risk and take subjects that I had never encountered in high school and sports studies was one of them. I mostly wondered what each class was going to be and how we were going to learn about sports through a different lenses such as english and sociology. Therefore, my expectations were exceeded because the practicum allowed all my brain power to be focused in one subject (sport), yet we dove into in numerous different subtopics in sports. For example, in Professor Colas’ class, we learned about sports through a week long lens each week, eventually reaching thirteen ways we can look at sports.…
