Her literary techniques contrast the reality of the small town with the larger than life antique fair. Taylor on the other hand gives images of various town landmarks and brief biographies that help describe the eerie character of the town of Natchez and its past residents.…

In these stories, the setting creates symbolism, whether it is a tree in reference to the qualities of the Tree of Knowledge found in In the Beginning, or a lush green forest representing life. Choosing the sequence of the film -The scene opens with a beautiful location going to Bradbury building(the hiding spot of Pris), resembling a an apartment complex in European classical look -Aspects of mise-en-scene make the world seem realistic and like they are really happening; though these images are unfamiliar -the audience is able to relate further into an unrelatable, futuristic setting. -Background filled with neon, bright lights. -These differences represent the difference between inherent human society which appears to be dark and shadowed, and the delving into the unknown and how exciting and mysterious it can be. The short extract from ‘Smoke, lilies and Jade’ by Richard Bruce Nugent is from a Bildungsroman play foretelling the plight of Alex - a 19-year-old, black, male facing internal conflicts and confusion in regards to his sexuality. Therefore, taking this context into consideration, the extract naturally issues an underlying, thematic patterning of fragmentation, uncertainty, and tension. From a close reading, these themes spill out through the content, the form, as well as the diction. In more specific terms, it is achieved through literary and stylistic devices in the following ways; an abstract stream of consciousness disfigured shifts between time and setting, the disparity between an exterior and interior dialogue, and finally, the rebellious…
