Transient Motivation

Human walking has been studied extensively with the assumption of steady-state gait. However, we rarely walk under steady-state conditions. Acceleration and deceleration, obstacle negotiation, disturbance rejection and turning are all examples of behavior that require modulation of walking speed which is in turn driven by transient changes in muscle activations. A few studies in recent years have explored characteristics of transient walking [1], [2], [3]. It has been suggested that control of speed works through modulation of braking and propulsive impulses and to increase speed subjects change the braking impulse more than the propulsive one [2]. However, none of these studies have measured muscle activations and the conjectures made were formed by looking at the joint moments and ground reaction impulses. In the most recent study from our lab we have shown that the activity of plantarflexors are modulated to change both the braking and the propulsive impulses (details at www). Visual perturbations were used in these experiments to elicit transient responses in muscles. It is not clear whether mechanical perturbations will result in the same changes during transient …show more content…
We hypothesize that both braking and propulsive components are significantly modulated in response to surface perturbations. The contribution of changes in each component to the total changes in speed is subject to investigation.
Aim #2: To compare and contrast transient responses to mechanical perturbations to those observed in response to visual perturbations and compare both of these transient changes to transient changes during acceleration and deceleration in absence of perturbations (from [] and []). We expect to observe some similarities between different types of transient changes in activations.

    1. The Jendrassik maneuver played a major role on the patellar reflex. One of the prevailing hypotheses has to deal with the alpha-gamma co-activation theory. It states that the alpha motor neurons activates the motor tone, which leads to the spindles providing feedback to the brain. This process is done by the gamma motor neurons, who are in charge of controlling the stimulation of the cerebellum.…

Intrinsic motivation refers to being inspired within one’s self in order to accomplish a project or task. Intrinsic motivation compels an individual to accomplish things just for the pleasure of it or simply because it is thought to be an enjoyable or appropriate thing to do. Compared to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation is a far stronger motivator. However, external motivation can simply act to displace intrinsic motivation. A person who has a hobby is intrinsically motivated.…

The introduction of this lab report discussed and elaborated how muscle contraction is an intricate and precise step-by-step process in the body. The concepts outlined at the introduction intertwine with the experiments performed in this laboratory. The experiments aimed to showcase the physiological cause and effect of skeletal muscle response towards various settings. For instance, the first experiment demonstrated spatial summation through the form of muscle recruitment. The cause of this reaction was due to the increased voltage stimuli on the sciatic nerve.…

Motivation 3.0 is based off of Type I behavior which Pink explains is the motivation to have the opportunity to complete anything with the freedom and do certain things your way. Pink believes we should move more towards motivation 3.0 because it will bring better performances from people. I do agree with pink simply because I can relate this to myself. In a business you have to work according to what they want you to do and their procedures but I find that changing the way you work to fit your style but as well as still accommodating to what needs to be done is the best way in which I perform. I would see motivation 3.0 working for me in my academic future but I also would see it not working for me.…
