The first section where management needs to occur is in the bathrooms at school. There has been considerable arguments between the states and the government over what should be done. Obviously, these people need to use the restroom somewhere, but transgenders believe they should be able to use the restroom of their choice, while most high schools disagree and state that transgenders belong in the place that is declared on their birth certificate. Allowing transgenders to use the restroom of their choice would significantly raise that students self-esteem, but unfortunately many states are creating laws that ban transgenders from using the bathroom they identify with. Recently however, President Barack Obama tested the states as he is attempting to pass a law that will allow transgenders to use the bathroom of their choice based of Title XI. This states that, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (US Department of Education 1). Most people have been accepting of females participating in men’s sports, but like many others, Eric Vilain, a professor of human genetics at UCLA, argues for women when talking about men competing in female sports. He states, “We separate men and women into categories because we want women to be able to win some competitions. There is 10 to 12% difference between male and female athletic performance. We need to categorize with criteria that are relevant to performance. It is a very difficult situation with no easy solution" (qtd. in Layden par. 9). The only fair solution is for transgender students to participate in sports where their testosterone is most similar to a sex. Testosterone is a hormone that increases muscle mass and develops male characteristics in a body. A typical testosterone level for females is .5 nmol/L to 3 nmol/L and for men it is approximately 10 to 30. In order for students to get to the opposite sex’s testosterone level is to undergo a sex change. (Layden par. 13) Although a sex change is expensive, it will allow these students to participate in their desired sport fairly and competitively with the other
