There are still multitudes of people who do not have the benefit of these rights. Specifically, those who are transgender. There have been some important recent legal rulings and political votes bolstering transgender rights. Consequently, a surge of hostility from various conservative activists have made their battle for equality considerably more challenging for transgender-rights leaders in building public support for their cause (Associated Press). Gender Dysphoria is described as the condition of feeling one 's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one 's biological sex. “Gender identity disorder is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the ‘bible’ of psychiatry” (Park). On the other side of the spectrum, some say the name itself “implies that gender identities held by a diagnosable people are not legitimate…, self-identified trans-women and trans-men lose any rightful claim to acceptance…” (Winters 314). If it has a set of symptoms and listed in the Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, than it is likely it is a genuine disorder. Declassifying GID would simply make it a cosmetic issue, when there are clear medical applications that some require, even at the risk of suicide if they don 't have access to these operations (White 313), coupled with the resentment of those less accepting could increase suicide rates. Their mentality is at stake and pushing another human being into such a state is inhumane. “People with gender identity disorder deserve proper medical and psychiatric help,” Regina Griggs declared.
