Transgender Scholarship

Decent Essays
I’ve never been one to express myself with words. In fact, I lacked the motivation to stay focused on school. As of lately though, I found the right school, right teachers, and right friends to keep me in check. I’ll be graduating this year and I’m hoping to receive your scholarship to help not only me, but others.
I realize the cliche in this essay, but it’s true. With your scholarship, I’ll be able to take classes in psychology, sociology and earn my degree to help the transgender community begin their transition and make sure they’re making the right choice. We need more people in this profession to let those who feel like they can’t speak, finally have the voice they always wanted and needed.
I’ve done a lot of research on the matter on

To most people, it may be difficult to fully understand the many obstacles that trans people face on a daily basis. They face huge disparities in almost every facet of society. Employers and landlords may gainsay people jobs and homes because they don't conform to gender norms, which is licit to do in 31 states. The 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) found trans people are approximately four times as likely to live in extreme impecuniosity compared to the general population. NTDS found 57 percent of trans people report family abnegation.…

With the assistance of the R.J. Hoyman Scholarship, I now know that I will be able to continue my education at Lane Community College this coming year. I am honored and extremely grateful to you for this amazing opportunity; knowing that I would inevitably be paying for hormones and surgery in my transition, I was afraid to dream of continuing my education. But, your support assures me that there are people who want to see LGBTQ+ folks like myself achieve their goals and dreams. For me college has not only helped me realize that, despite hardship, I do have a future to dream of but also that I can use my experience to help other folks in my community. Being a former high school dropout and continuing to higher education, I have been able to…

I think I should be a part of Mortar Board because I have spent the entirety of my college career working to strengthen my skills in leadership and build on my character. I am very dedicated to my studies, and I make it a priority to excel in all of my classes. While I am already involved in many activities on campus, I am always careful to decide whether I have the time to give to a new organization before joining. I am well aware of the time requirements and level of commitment that would be expected of me as a member of Mortar Board, and I am both able and willing to commit. I think I would be a great addition to Mortar Board because scholarship, leadership, and service are all aspects of my life that are very important to me.…

Our research led us to strengthen our connections with the transgender community in collaboration with the following organizations: Transgender Michigan, Affirmations, Gender Identity Network Alliance, Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit, and the Ruth Ellis Center. We also collaborated with Macomb Community College, the Michigan Region of Phi Theta Kappa, chapters from Oakland and Henry Ford Community Colleges, and social work students from Wayne State University. Additionally, we advertised at the local LGBT publication “Between the Lines.” As a result, we were able to create a more welcoming atmosphere for the transgender community.…

The gender-neutral initiative I would like to see is the implementation of in-depth education for health care workers. I believe that transgender people have needs that should be taken into consideration when implementing care. A limited amount of information is available to appropriately deal with many unique clinical issues such as hormone replacement interaction with other drugs and or social issues that may arise, and out of embarrassment from the patient to provide detail facts, and the caregiver not wanting to use words or statements to violate the patient’s rights may cause a delay in care or treatment. All patients matter and should be cared for and treated equally.…

I am willing to bet that there are many astonishing young men and women who have applied for this scholarship. I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. I will not boast promises of outstanding grades or how this money could build my future. Instead, I will tell of my past, allowing my personality speak for itself. Growing up my parents always encouraged my siblings and me to stay true to ourselves, whether that is morally, mentally, and/or physically.…

How long do you expect to live? Although technology is rapidly developing, health care has been improved, and longevity increases more commonly in human evolution, we surely know that lifetime is always a limited three-digit number. I am not an exception, I am also afraid of sickness and death. However, above all, I am most afraid of myself, of not knowing the purpose of my existence on this earth, of living aimlessly and dreamlessly. The most vital development in my life is to identify myself and recognize my dream.…

This campus is extraordinary in how it includes minorities to the best of it’s abilities, and to be able to contribute to this inclusion and affect people one-on-one is just one of my many goals I have. If I am granted the opportunity to influence the campus with my being, I hope through helping others I’ll find the courage within myself to be able to come out to my family. It’s important to me that, as a transgender boy, I can impact as many other students and professors as I can by being open and sharing my adversities and my fun side. With my gender aside, there’s not a thing I love more than the free feeling of genuine glee and laughter, which is something I also plan to bring to the campus life. Making people laugh, being able to experience art together, sharing our hardships and understanding one another, venting our rage together, and just genuinely making my peers feel some sort of way is the way I wish to enrich the community.…

When I asked a transgender male about the biggest issue society faces in accepting transgender individuals, he replied, “I think society’s biggest failing is not seeing us as people. Being transgender does not make you any different than anyone else.” His words moved me and reminded me why I felt his story needed to be told. Anthony Davis Pait is a transgender teenager who transitioned from female to male.…

Studies show that transgender people endure harassment and even violence in health care, housing, and social services. The same studies show that 45% of transgender people attempted suicide and that those who experienced physical and sexual assault were at a higher risk. If this bill is passed it will contribute to ending violence and harassment against the transgender community. It could end employment discrimination and raise transgender individuals out of poverty. Not to mention, preventing the bullying, ridicule and in extreme cases physical and sexual abuse that transgender youth face in schools and in…

As a country, we have grown, being less narrow-minded and ignorant, to being more open-minded and accepting. Consequently, while this may be true, it might not apply to places where it should be the truest, for instance, schools. Why does the fear of the unknown lead to the oppression of certain individuals in today 's school system? Fear of the unknown leads to the oppression of certain individuals in today 's school system because not allowing Transgender Children and teens to be themselves in one of the few places they should be able to express their individuality, shows them they’re not accepted and may lead to suicide, or depression. Throughout this paper, addressing the issues of Transgenderism, cisgenderism, and sexism will be the focus.…

Going into my senior year I applied for every scholarship that I could get my hands on. I wrote and I rewrote until I was comfortable enough to submit my work. With all of the work I had put in I was coming up with meek results. These results persisted until I stopped composing the cookie cutter scholarship essay that I thought the organization would want, and I really found my voice. My teacher Mr. Hayworth is responsible for giving me the foundation to build my confidence and uncover my…

In both these careers it is crucial to recognize the kind of oppression and marginalization that people from different communities go through, in order to be the most effective in guiding them in their lives. One of my favorite quotes is by Martin Luther King Jr and goes, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” My end goal for this project is to drive out any hate or prejudices I have against the transgender community and replace it with love, acceptance, and understanding through…
