Transgender Research Paper

Decent Essays
Transgender people — who are far more likely to be the victims of harassment and violence if forced to use a bathroom that is inconsistent with their gender identity or expression — deserve to have the ability to use the bathroom in peace and safety. Using the bathroom is a basic human function and denying that to a person is inhumane. Creating laws that discriminate against any group of American citizen will only threaten our individual and collective sense of safety and security.

Recent in the news I have been hearing about the Trans Bathroom Law and it genuinely confuses me as to why it is such an issues. Why do people care so much about a stranger's genitals that would prompt them to make a law forcing them to use the incorrect bathroom? I am a transman living in Texas just trying to get by. This law affects me and people around me because I am a mostly passing man having to use the Women’s bathroom. I do not understand why forcing a trans person to use the wrong bathroom is more acceptable than having the decency to just let them use the restroom of gender they identify with.…

The author argues that anyone who is not phased by breaking the law, wont stop them from entering a restroom that prohibits them from using either. In addition, the author argues that most people would not even notice a transgender using the public restroom, and if they did notice, they most likely would not confront them to find out if they are the right gender for the specific restroom they are in. Transgender is happening more and more, eventually lawmakers will have to figure out what will work and what will not work. For now, we can just hope to use the public restroom privately and safely and not be offended whether you are transgender or…

The article “Family Invites Paxton to Dinner to put a Face on Transgender Issues” discusses the experience the Briggle family faced after inviting the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over for dinner on Thursday, September 1st. The beginning of the article shared how Adam and Amber Briggle were nervous about having dinner with Paxton. This was because Adam and Amber have a transgender son and knew about Paxton’s recent decision to oppose the expansion of civil rights for gay and transgender people. Paxton opposing to expand civil rights for the gay and transgender population resulted in Adam and Amber to become concerned about their son’s safety when he goes to the bathroom at school. Inviting the Paxton family over for dinner was an act of diplomacy by the Briggle family and was a way for them to bond with the Paxton family; showing they are a family that cares deeply about the safe upbringing of their son in the Dallas-Fort community.…

A law permitting transgenders to the bathroom could possibly allow predators to physically hurt boys and girls. But, this possibility is one which society can bear for “the sake of the greater good of human freedom” (Mill 43). Society must endure possible damage, for the sake of individual expression. There should instead be a law that punishes sexual predators for assaulting boys and girls in bathrooms. Rather than one that bans transgenders from entering bathrooms they feel comfortable with, from fear of possible sexual…

I really don’t care if transgender people use the bathroom they identify with, they have been for years without it being a real problem. But pre transitioned transgenders are of a different topic. There has been so much controversy because essentially anyone who claims to be transgender will be able to use the restroom of their choice, and no one would be able to differentiate a true transgender person from someone who wants to use the other restroom. Gender neutral bathrooms seem like a good idea, but then there is the subject of rape which cannot ever be overlooked, it is far too important. This is a very grey area that I am truly glad is no longer in the hands of the federal government.…

In some states there are laws against having a transgender male or female use the bathroom that they identify with as stated by Catherine Shoichet in the recent article “North Carolina transgender law: Is it discriminatory?”, These laws are seen as discriminatory towards all transgendered people regardless of race or gender in the LGBT+ community. Activist, Candis Cox a well known transgender woman says “ This law affects us because it puts us in danger, and it's open discrimination.” , to say that she is full of ignorance is to ignore the trouble that she and over a million others are going though. This law is created to demand people to identify as a human that is on paper, a human that is documented, a human who will remain the same in the eyes of a religious filled government. Safety amongst citizens is an issue in the government as well. Most politicians against Transgendered people and rights have one same notion in mind “men should be where men are and women should be where women are.”…

This has brought up controversy and protest against the bill. The fear of endangerment to women and young children are being brought up as an issue with the Bathroom Bill. But what about the dangers transgenders may face? While there may be fear of transgenders attacking others in public bathrooms, there have been many incidents where transgenders have been attacked themselves. Transgender doesn’t mean violent offender or pedophile when these claims are made.…

Even recently, in North Carolina, our state government has issued what is basically an anti-trans bill. This bill (House Bill two, often abbreviated to HB2) requires that transgender people, regardless of the surgeries they may or may have had, to use public bathrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate. Many people believe that this was out of fear that a trans women, who they believe is still a man, would try to come into the women’s restroom and harass women or children. The only time I’ve heard of harassment in a public restroom is from cis-gendered people harassing transgender people or people of the same gender…

Reflections as a Researcher As a member of the community this study examine, I have had come to consider myself a troubled and troubling “insider”. I am troubled because as a post-operative woman I have come to understand my gender transition as a stabilizing goal-oriented process, a consideration that is deeply challenged contested by my participants’ counter definition of the transgender experience as a destabilizing social process that should highlight indefinite fluidity and creative potentialities for society at large. I expect my presence moving forward to be potential troubling in the field as I seek neither to affirm nor deny institutional intentions nor participants’ politics but rather document the impacts of the former onto the…
