Transgender In The Military

II. Transgender in the Military
Transgender represents 3-5% of the American population. Being out while in the military carries with it a host of other associated difficulties, including overt discrimination and, in the past, possible discharge from the service (Cochran, Balsam, Flentje, Malte & Simpson, 2013). Currently 60,000 LGBT service members are serving in active duty and the inequality of the treatment that they are receiving is saddening. They are defined as having a mental disorder and seen as incompatible with military service and holding a negative representation for the military.

Current transgender-specific staff training is limited to four out of a 200-slide staff orientation PowerPoint presentation. An AFC staff member who identifies as transgender indicated that staff who identify as transgender feel that a more in-depth, specific training on increasing transgender cultural sensitivity is urgently needed because currently, over 90% of staff are cisgender. In order to decrease the potential for unintended marginalization of transgender staff, it is necessary to increase training to bring equity to the voices and needs of individuals who identify as transgender; this need has also been communicated by AFC clients. This gap in current training contributes to weak staff rapport between transgender and cisgender staff…

All four of the articles show the disparities that exist within the work environment. “The Glass Escalator” by Christine L. Williams showed how men not only face a huge advantage in female dominated careers but also discrimination. “The Global Woman” by Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Russell Hochschild tell how many immigrant women are leaving their home countries at alarming rates to take on domestic jobs elsewhere. “The Globetrotting Sneaker” by Cynthia Enloe is about how many companies benefit from globalization, and use it as a tool to dehumanize and mistreat women in foreign countries. Lastly, “Fort Bragg: Command” by Jefferey McGowan details how biased the military was, and still is, against homosexuals, especially during the “Don’t…

Joseph R Murray II states that President Trumps ban on Transgenders serving in the military is unfair. Though despite having this opinion, he is for the ban on the basis that Transgender people are dealing with issues psychologically and pysically. In addition, he Murray believes it would create a problem because people would spend more time talking about the issue of Transgenders fighting in the military aside from the greater issues that are occurring in society. With that being said, I would have to disagree with Murrays stance. There are many problems that I see within this ban.…

In September of 2011 , President Barack Obama abolished the “ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military” (Cloud, Washington Bureau). This is a repulsion to the “don’t ask, don 't tell” policy that was implemented during the Clinton president in an attempt to protect homosexuals from being discharged from the military because of their sexuality. But this also posed problems of intolerance because if a lesbian woman or gay man were found out then they risked the immediate removal from the military. Although there have been reforms to these types of laws , there is still a sentiment embedded into the military that homosexuals will pose a problem if openly included. There is still tension on issues such as whether to have “same sex housing and how the military will deal with discrimination complaints by gay service members” (Cloud, Washington Bureau).…

When first hearing the word “equality” what comes to mind? Equality, in moral and definitive standards, is the equal status, rights, and opportunities that all citizens should have upon being born. Our basic human rights should not be abnegated upon the basis of someones race, religion, sex, or sexual preferences. Throughout history, homosexuals — one sexually attracted to people of one’s own gender — have always been discriminated upon. For the past century homosexuals have protested and stood together to fight for their equality.…
