Personal Narrative: My Identity As A Woman

Third is the topic of gender, which is not to be confused with sex. Gender is how you identify and sex is what your body parts at birth state you are. I identity as female, and my sex is female, which makes me cisgender. Identifying this way has made for an easier life, as far as how others treat me. Although our society is becoming more open-minded to transgender individuals, there are still people that are not, and proceed to not treat them as humans. I am therefore very privileged that I identify this way. Identifying as a female though does lead for a lot of cultural norms to surround my life. Often I am seen as not tough and not capable of much besides taking care of children, cooking and cleaning. Although I am very nurturing …show more content…
I am a very intelligent female, who is going to school with the hopes of becoming a doctor. This fact, always throws off people, as doctors are usually thought of as males. I have been told many times by male doctors that going to medical school is a waste of time, since most female doctors go to medical school and then want to start a family, setting back their career. This frustrates me, but has never discouraged me, as I know I can do both! Being chemistry major is another thing that throws people for a loop, as females are usually more English minded and not math and science mind as I am. I once had a professor who called attention to this in front of the whole class stating that we needed more females in the science field, which I really took offense to. Being a female in the work place too, also sets me up for always being looked down upon or incompetent. I also may face being paid less in my workplace, something that I will not stand for. One more disadvantage of identifying and looking like a female, is that I always have to be really aware of my surroundings. This means I can never walk home alone at night and honestly society set sup women to have a hard time trusting others. We always questions guys’ intentions and have to be extra careful

This gender bias is definitely one that women have to deal with more frequently compared to men. Deborah Tannen author of “There is No Unmakred Woman,” reveals that women have been predominantly “marked,” which refers to the “meaning of a word [combined with] a linguistic particle that has no meaning on its own” from the moment they enter this world (Tannen 410). Even if it’s hair, clothing, makeup or surnames, there is no style that leaves women unmarked. This causes “gender markers” to “pick up extra meanings that reflect common associations with the female gender” (Tannen 411). If a woman does even the merest action that society does not approve of, it expresses out a memo that will be judged and criticized.…

There are many gender roles that I have seen or personally experienced myself. I’ve had a friend tell me before that I suck at driving because I am a girl. When asked why, his response that women aren’t very good drivers. I’ve also had co-workers tell me that I am a good worker and that they don’t see hard working girls. I’ve worked at Safeway for about three years now and I can say that I experience gender roles about almost everyday, whether it’s because I’m short or because something is too heavy for me to lift up.…

Even though these assumptions put limitations on my experiences and opportunities, there are many things where being a female has its advantages. According to a study done by intelligence researcher James Flynn, women have higher IQ’s than men worldwide. Females are able to multitask and handle stress better than men. Now more than ever, there is a push for more women to enter male dominated jobs and to get a higher quality education. When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

There is another side to this story because women are also able to be leaders, business owners, and much more. It makes people look at me as if I can’t do the same thing as other men, when I can. People look down on me like I am weaker and not able to comprehend or keep up with is what is going on. For example, I had a car issues where the battery died, I just needed a pair of jumpers and I could have done it myself. I had found someone to lend me a pair and the entire time I was being questioned if I was able to complete this task myself, it was very frustrating and defeating.…

Even if gender isn't a big impact on a person's life some may argue. Right off the bat gender depends on how you act like you have to act a certain way according to your gender. Say you a male in society's P.O.V you have to get a job and bring home money and be successful but some men don't do that and in society's view it's wrong. Another thing is in society's P.O.V for women they have to stay and take care of household things and they can't make a…

Identity is an enigma that every teenager struggles with. It's the conflict in each of our very own Bildungsromans - who are we? When I started the Common Application on August 1st, being the overachiever that I am, I believed that I did not have an identity to write about. I knew that I liked reading and music or that I hated algebra, but I didn't have an overarching sense of self. How could I write about myself in such a way as to impress admissions officers when I didn't even think I had a personality worth noting?…

Developing and describing my own background and identity is a lifelong process, which can be differ from one stage of to another. "Identities are the traits and characteristics, social relations, roles, and social group memberships that define who one is" (Oyserman, Elmore, & Smith, 2012, p. 69). My personal identities and roles are developed through by background experiences. I was born and raised in very small village of Nepal, where I did not have so much opportunity to enhance my knowledge, and skill. A woman should come across a soft spoken, feminine whereas a man should be masculine. However, every individual carries his/her own personality and behaviour inclusive of his/her gender. As West and Zimmerman suggests, that gender is not a social role, but is an individual arena based upon daily interactions and behaviours (West and Zimmerman 94). Hence, a person should not be forced to behave in a certain way. Moreover, the binary system forms separate roles for women and men in the society; so, when someone tries to perform a role of the opposite gender it is seen as exceptional and is not easily accepted like working moms and stay at home dads.…
