Transgender Gender Roles

Gender is a social construct, created by society and by cultures to sort out proper roles, behaviors, and appearances for people simply based on their gender. This binary entrenches everyone involved. Men must be masculine, never show emotion, and be 'manly'. While females must be delicate, graceful, small and domestic. Although we are making a great push to break these gender roles, especially with females, we have a long way to go. Men are shamed for acting feminine, because of course masculinity is superior to femininity. Feminine females are shamed for following these roles, cheerleaders for example are often shamed for dancing in skimpy clothing. Evidence of this need to gender is everywhere. Transgender people have to hide who they are in fear of being hurt and seen as different. Religion plays a great deal into cultural and societal views on gender. That idea that transgender people are rejecting god's great gift, their bodies. However if one undergoes plastic surgery to enhance an aspect of themselves they are rarely ever condemned for rejecting god's body. Transgender people are regularly the victims of hate crimes. "20% had been physically or sexually assaulted for being trans... 34% had been verbally threatened or harassed but not assaulted." (Greta Bauer, 6) Passing, successfully appearing as the desired gender and appearing cisgendered in that, is an important part of transgender society, but the topic is incredibly controversial. Trans people's appearance are under intense scrutiny by virtually everyone any change they make will be noticed and judged, Caitlyn Jenner for example was constantly under scrutiny when she came out. Everyone wanted to know what was going on with her. The biggest example however is when people ask what genitalia a transgender person has and weather they have had bottom surgery. Transgender people are forced to follow what society assumes a male or female should act like, trans woman have to act feminine otherwise they will not be considered woman both in society and under the law. For a transgender person to be seen under the law as their decided gender they must undergo scrutiny from medical professionals who decide weather they are truly

There are so few transgenders on T.V., which means their struggle is swept under the rug. According to an EOnline’s interview with Nick Adams from GLAAD, “Forty-one percent of transgender people report attempting suicide—not thinking about suicide, but attempting suicide. It 's not because transgender people are more mentally unstable than anyone else, it 's because we live in a culture which makes it seem like it 's nearly impossible to be a happy, successful transgender person” (Adams). That is a huge number considering only 0.6% of people in the United States identifies as transgender. It’s deemed socially unacceptable by society, which has only caused the hate to continue to spew.…

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…
