Transgender Course Analysis

One of the many things I appreciate for this course, aside from the fact that it’s not a typical note-taking course, is the fact that the majority of our class topics and discussions are great conversation starters in my friend group. And I love how erudite I sound when my friends say something I have to correct them. Just last Friday, I had lunch with my sister and our friends and the conversation shifted to transgender people. My dorm previously had a ‘Men’ and ‘Women’ bathroom and out of the blue, with no warning, it was changed to ‘All Gender’. And my friend said he did not quite understand the term ‘transgender’. So I straightened up and sat upright to educate my peers.
My friends had so many questions about how people know their transgender or what procedures they may choose to undergo to complete their

I think the way a person communicates with a family member, friend, etc. is based on how their parent(s)/guardian(s) raised them and their personality. My parents raised me to speak to family and outsiders with respect and my personality is that I will give a person respect, unless you disrespect me. So, if I need help or need to confront somebody over something I don’t like that they are doing, then I will come from an understanding, respectful approach. I’m not sure instilling this type of communication style as I am a lot older, like maybe this should have been taught along with reading and phonics in middle school.
And I remember that that paper about communication strategies said to avoid sarcasm and I don’t think I can give that aspect of myself. I know the human body is made up of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus, but mine is composed of all of those elements along with Sarcasm. And I know I just said that I give others respect, but sarcasm is part of the package, and it shows regardless of whatever emotion I

Current transgender-specific staff training is limited to four out of a 200-slide staff orientation PowerPoint presentation. An AFC staff member who identifies as transgender indicated that staff who identify as transgender feel that a more in-depth, specific training on increasing transgender cultural sensitivity is urgently needed because currently, over 90% of staff are cisgender. In order to decrease the potential for unintended marginalization of transgender staff, it is necessary to increase training to bring equity to the voices and needs of individuals who identify as transgender; this need has also been communicated by AFC clients. This gap in current training contributes to weak staff rapport between transgender and cisgender staff…

The article “Family Invites Paxton to Dinner to put a Face on Transgender Issues” discusses the experience the Briggle family faced after inviting the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over for dinner on Thursday, September 1st. The beginning of the article shared how Adam and Amber Briggle were nervous about having dinner with Paxton. This was because Adam and Amber have a transgender son and knew about Paxton’s recent decision to oppose the expansion of civil rights for gay and transgender people. Paxton opposing to expand civil rights for the gay and transgender population resulted in Adam and Amber to become concerned about their son’s safety when he goes to the bathroom at school. Inviting the Paxton family over for dinner was an act of diplomacy by the Briggle family and was a way for them to bond with the Paxton family; showing they are a family that cares deeply about the safe upbringing of their son in the Dallas-Fort community.…

Transgender Being transgender is when a person’s gender identity does not conform with their biological sex. Speculating on how people are identifying as a transgender individual is a difficult and very controversial topic to discuss due to the fact that nobody knows what is morally correct. One author, Ruth Padawer, has brought the topic to light, presenting us with examples from one of the most prestigious women’s colleges in the United States. In her 2014 piece, “Sisterhood is Complicated”, she ponders on the idea of if people who identify as transgender should be permitted to attend an all women’s college. In her piece, she states that, “Some two dozen other matriculating students at Wellesley don’t identify as women.…

The third box, which was on a separate line that the other two boxes, read “transgender”. This was the first time I had seen more than two options available for gender selection. After my initial excitement that this was a step toward inclusivity, I began to question whether or not this gender identification section was appropriately accommodating to the transgendered community. The difficult question of what to label transgendered people is a problem that bears numerous implications for…

Since their stigma is known discredited people are confronted with the problem of managing the tension caused by that knowledge during social contracts with ‘normals’ (Goffman 1963). Transgender people who have disclosed their transgender status fall into this category and are forced to navigate invasive and inappropriate questions about their personal history, what surgeries they have or have not had, and intense discrimination in some cases. Tactics to deal with the awkward, difficult or even downright hostile social interactions include attempts to “make light of the situation, appearance manipulation, and the careful following of a sometimes elaborate disclosure etiquette” (Xavier “Passing as Stigma Management”). Goffman called this kind of stigma management as tension management. Some within the transgender community prefer not to endure this humiliation and prefer to live their lives privately in what is commonly referred to as “stealth” in the transgender…

Kailey (2005) explains his/her struggle as a transgender individual who felt guilty for not following the gender rules. Instead, Kailey (2005) presents the beauty of being a transsexual person and the opportunity they have in America to change not only their appearance but also their own future. According to Kailey (2005) change in many cultures is perceived as dangerous and unacceptable, for transsexual individuals, change is what describes their opportunity to accomplish their dreams and to succeed in society. Even though, American culture is becoming more aware and is being exposed to different gender expression, sexuality, roles and expectations compared to other cultures, change is needed at an institutional level. There is no explanation why transsexual individuals, men, women, gay, lesbians should be employed differently or have to choose between binary categorized bathrooms to meet biological needs.…

In the article, "The Transgender Tipping Point", the Trans world was introduced to the society we know today. After one year of the decision from the Supreme Court to allow people to marry who they loved, no matter their sex, transgender people begun to build a civil-rights movement to challenge the long-term norms and beliefs. What were news to me that I learned in the article, there is no concrete correlation between a person's gender identity and sexual interests and many insurance plans have explicit exclusions for treatments related to gender transitions. These were issues that some transgender people had to reject because of seeing gender as a spectrum than a freedom to their movements. States in America, such as, Connecticut and Vermont…

Lately in the news there has been some controversy in the news about transgenders using the bathrooms they claim they have to use. Recently Donald Trump has made a statement about transgenders saying he has no problem with transgender people using whatever bathroom they chose. In my opinion I think that transgenders should use the sex of gender they were born with until there transformation is complete. I think they should make a separate bathroom for transgenders or since they are in the process (unisex) . I mean if it was just one single bathroom with one toilet and it was meant to be used for both sexs then I don’t think that we should worry about anything because nobody else would be in there with you.…

In a generation where communication skills have relocated primarily to a technological platform, it is imperative that heightened communication between children and parents exist as a method of maintaining emotional well being in an atypically modernizing society. This can be accomplished in numerous practices between adults and adolescents; being readily available, attentively listening to one another and responding in a fair-minded manner are superlative methods in which all members of a family, particularly parents and their children can communicate. While the world begins to focus on the detrimental relations between children and their superiors, it is beneficial to recognize how communication built on equality can lead to a better understanding…

Throughout high school, my written assignments were almost always a five-paragraph structure or, in other words, a "keyhole essay. " As a first-year business major student, I have not been assigned written assignments since high school so I never realized the negatives of a keyhole essay; It simplifies a lot of the topic by narrowing it down to three main paragraphs with evidence. Writing a basic five-paragraph assignment limits a lot of important information no matter how broad the topic is. I am excited to learn different ways to advance my writing skills through different formats rather than the basic high school structure. Although I may not be a great writer, I definitely enjoy writing.…

If there is one overarching word which describes the way my family communicates, it would be concise. Ever since I was young, I can’t remember a time in which my parents used more words than they had to. Growing up, both my parents and even my brother and sister were always busy. A social interaction study was conducted within the Tyndale Christian Junior School that involved teaching two focus groups of five students how to make masquerade masks. The groups included both males and females within the ages of four to six. Upon the completion of this study, I learnt that while I communicate with people I change the way that I speak depending on who I am conversing with. When I spoke to the younger children my tone sounded much higher and I spoke at a slower and clearer pace than I usually would.…
