Caitlyn Jenner herself was quoted saying that “the hardest part about being a woman is figuring out what to wear.” Many consider it stunning progress that we have successfully integrated transgender women into the pages of our largest magazines and onto our television screens. However, an identity for transgender women was never established outside of the traditional female archetypes that support the perpetuation of Capitalism. Dozens of transgender women, especially transgender women of color, have been murdered in the past year.…

On the night of October 19th, I attended an event co sponsored by the Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies department and the Franklin Humanities institute at Duke. Doctor Nicholas L. Clarkson joined us to inspire a discussion about the intersection between biopolitics, identity, citizenship and nationalism. To begin, Dr. Clarkson discussed the 2003 Department of Homeland Security memo signaling security personnel to be alert for terrorist who concealed weapons under women’s clothing. The publishing of this memo would foreshadow the eventual linkage of transgendered people with terror/terrorism. A central theme to Clarkson's talk was the misrepresentation and visibility factors of transgendered people in contemporary society.…

The article “Family Invites Paxton to Dinner to put a Face on Transgender Issues” discusses the experience the Briggle family faced after inviting the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over for dinner on Thursday, September 1st. The beginning of the article shared how Adam and Amber Briggle were nervous about having dinner with Paxton. This was because Adam and Amber have a transgender son and knew about Paxton’s recent decision to oppose the expansion of civil rights for gay and transgender people. Paxton opposing to expand civil rights for the gay and transgender population resulted in Adam and Amber to become concerned about their son’s safety when he goes to the bathroom at school. Inviting the Paxton family over for dinner was an act of diplomacy by the Briggle family and was a way for them to bond with the Paxton family; showing they are a family that cares deeply about the safe upbringing of their son in the Dallas-Fort community.…

In class, we spent a fair amount of time discussing Caitlyn Jenner and what her transition and experiences mean for the transgender movement. Many people in class proclaimed that they believe that all news coverage is good news coverage, similar to the sentiment “all publicity is good publicity”. However, I do not believe that that is necessarily true. For the most part, Caitlyn Jenner and her actions have set the transgender movement back tremendously. One major issue is that the general public looks to Jenner as the epitome of what it means to be a transgender woman in the United States, which is a harmful narrative, particularly when that narrative is so dominant.…

I lead my life according to the belief that, success is a measure of our perceived reality. We are what we think, and in many socially oppressed communities, barriers toward living a whole, productive, successful life is beyond the grasp for many. Social justice acts as voice for communities held back by systems of oppression, and works to dismantle systems, allowing disadvantaged groups the opportunity to reach their most successful life. Given the opportunity to be chosen to represent the transgender community means to me, being accountable to oppressed communities, the transgender community of Oregon, and beyond. In the words of Walidah Imarisha of Portland State University's Black Studies Department, Oregon State University's Women Gender Sexuality Studies Department ,“It means doing your work in…

There are many aspects of life that I stop thinking about until they are brought to my attention. Amongst these are breathing, blinking, and my blind obedience to the gender codes. Interacting with those that show the characteristics of the opposite group to which society places them or present themselves as belonging to no binary group is left as a confusing/ awkward experience as there are much fewer exemplars for those in society. The media subliminally asserts its power over my interactions with others beginning with my first encounter with them.…
