The most severe of these bills is a bill from Florida “that would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to knowingly enter a bathroom that didn’t match the sex on their driver’s license or passport” (Steinmetz). This would affect numerous students and people in general who cannot change their gender on their official documents yet. One could get a misdemeanor just for using a public restroom facility. In addition to the Florida bill, “Republican state lawmakers are backing a bill that would require students in Kentucky to use the facilities that correspond to the sex listed on their birth certificate” and if this passes this means a student could sue for $2,500 if they encounter a student whose biological gender does not correspond with the restroom facility that they are using (Steinmetz). This is yet another bill that could fine a person, specifically students, for going to a restroom when students are the least likely to be able to change their gender on government…

This statement immediately shows Thiessen’s awareness of the problems that may be caused by biological men that use women’s restrooms or changing rooms. Thiessen argues that instead of the law allowing any person to enter the gendered-facility of his/her choice, public areas should provide access to single-room bathrooms or changing-rooms that are for transgendered people. This one-person room allows a person to use whichever facility that he/she identifies with, but it also protects women and children from being exposed to someone who falsely claims the identity of a transgender. A law permitting transgenders to the bathroom could possibly allow predators to physically hurt boys and girls. But, this possibility is one which society can bear for “the sake of the greater good of human freedom” (Mill 43). Society must endure possible damage, for the sake of individual expression. There should instead be a law that punishes sexual predators for assaulting boys and girls in bathrooms. Rather than one that bans transgenders from entering bathrooms they feel comfortable with, from fear of possible sexual…

In February this year, the Trump government took its first critical ant-LGBTQ guideline stance, by rescinding a guidance that safeguarded transgender students from profiling in interstate sponsored schools, and most contentiously, asked schools to allow trans students utilize the restrooms and locker room that match with their birth gender. It was the restroom segment that made the policy so contentious amongst conservative policymakers, prompting states to file litigations against the Obama administration and, finally, resulting in the Trump government to repeal the policy (Danilova & Gurman N.p.). Although these voices of disapproval have been brash, it is not clear that they are representative of how individuals in the nation think about…

Every year, there is a new controversial state law resulting in a nationwide backlash. As of March 23, 2016, North Carolina officially joined the reign of states that include laws that tear the population apart. In the past year, the United States has made significant progress in the fight for LGBT equality. Over the summer, we watched as the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges allowed same-sex couples in all 50 states to get legally married, and while the long-lasting battle for the legalization of same-sex marriage was won, the battle for gender identity equality was still at war. There is no federal law that prevents businesses and states from discriminating against gender identity and transgender people.…

As a result, Springfield-area schools are reviewing their policies regarding transgender students' use of bathrooms. A letter, signed by the leaders of the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education, was sent to school districts Friday. It sets guidelines on how schools can operate in compliance with Title IX, a federal statute that prohibits discrimination based on a student's gender identity. The guidance doesn't have the force of law but tells schools how the Department of Education intends to enforce Title IX in the future.…

Even recently, in North Carolina, our state government has issued what is basically an anti-trans bill. This bill (House Bill two, often abbreviated to HB2) requires that transgender people, regardless of the surgeries they may or may have had, to use public bathrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate. Many people believe that this was out of fear that a trans women, who they believe is still a man, would try to come into the women’s restroom and harass women or children. The only time I’ve heard of harassment in a public restroom is from cis-gendered people harassing transgender people or people of the same gender…

Transgender people need justice; we have the ability to take one small step in the right direction to assuring they are on their way to no longer being treated as second-class citizens, and we can take that small step by affirming this bill.
