In the past few years sexuality and the treatment of those who identify outside of heteronormative boundaries has become a prominent issue within the contemporary Civil Rights Movement. Recently there has been a huge debate regarding Transgender men and women's use of bathrooms. Some people and legislators believe that there should be gender neutral bathrooms, others believe that transgendered people should use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex they were assigned at birth, while others believe that transgendered individuals should be allowed to use whichever bathroom they identify with. Many believe that predators would enter bathrooms under the guise of being transgender and use legislation allowing transgender people to use public bathrooms to attack women and children. Other critics believe that transgendered people shouldn't be protected under the law because transgenderism isn't real or is a mental illness and is in fact harmful to children and those who accept it. These beliefs are not only ignorant but they are also completely false. Since the gender neutralization of bathrooms in 20 states only one attack has occurred where anti- discrimination legislation has been cited as a motive or means for the attack. “There is no apparent link between this new legislation and predatory violence. prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and state human rights commissions have consistently denied that there is any correlation between such policies and a spike in assaults.” Said CNN reporter Kwegyirba Croffin (CNN). As for Transgenderism being a mental illness many transgendered adults and cisgender medical professionals have assured the general public that it is not. “Having grown up as a child and an adult who experienced gender incongruence, I’m personally very clear it’s not a mental disorder,” says Jamison Green who is currently the president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and identifies as a transgender male. “There is stress that’s created as a result of having it reflected back to you that there’s something wrong with you” (Time Health). The World Health Organization in past years had listed gender dysmorphia as a disorder but plans to declassify diseases related to sexual orientation in 2018.
