School lunches are not only having an effect on children’s health, but also on how children learn and perform in school. According to the American Journal of Public Health, “Studies show that in addition to socioeconomic status, obesity, poor nutrition, and food insufficiency affect a child 's school achievement. Specifically, students who experience food insufficiency may have lower math scores, social difficulties, and psychological difficulties” (646). These children tend to develop low self-esteem and anxiety disorders. Children that are suffering from obesity are more than often teased and face discrimination at school. This innovative policy will include steps that should be taken in order to achieve this goal, and must be done so in a specific order. The basic changes that need to be made are parents need to get involved in what the school’s feeding their children. The state and federal governments should not be determining what schoolchildren should eat, but rather the parents and the community should. The people determining what school lunches consist of are not even eating the food and yet they get to decide what schoolchildren should eat and the kids are stuck with the health problems that tend to follow. Parents and the community need to stick together and go to the school board of how these school lunches need to be improved for not only nutrition, but also to prevent dangerous consequences. For example, according to “What’s Natural about our Natural Products?” in Language Awareness the words such as “natural”, “whole”, “100%” are not regulated and used to mislead consumers about varies products. (Federman 441-442). This is the kind of information we want to present to our kids in this modified curriculum to overall educate kids about health as well as health related food choices. This will help influence children to want to make healthier food choices and develop healthy eating habits. Step 7 don’t tell students what’s on the menu in advance. If students know what’s on the menu they will lose interest and not bother even eating or trying the healthy food. Finally step 8 alternate the menu give the students a variety of choices and not stick to the same main course, fruits, vegetables and drinks. Actions need to be taken to prevent further damage to children’s health.
