Reviewing the diverse educational theories of leadership, Shields (2011) describes three theories (transactional, transformational, and transformative), of which transformational leadership will be the focus of today’s writing. The philosophy of transformational leadership according to Leithwood (2010) there are four dimensions relating to setting directions, developing people, redesigning the organization, and managing the instructional program (Shields, 2011). When comparing transformative and transformational leadership, the reshaping of knowledge and belief structures aren’t necessarily areas of focus in transformational leaders (Shields, 2011). With transformational leadership, the leader focus largely on what happens with the organization using reform methods to improve the educational setting overall. The three building blocks of transformational leaders uses the concept according to Bates (1996) in a transformative manner, but the leader reshape and focus the corporate culture within the organization (Shields, 2011). These leaders value liberty, justice, and equality for their students, parents, and staff to be efficient completing their roles as various members in the education setting. As a skill, a transformational leader looks for motivation to develop school effectiveness and implement school reform that not only benefits the students in their academic learning, but also motivate educators to continue training and receiving mentoring at all stages of the teachers career.
