While transformational leadership is contingent on many leadership roles, perhaps some of the most central roles include innovation and risk taking. It is these roles that will shape and transform the nursing profession. Transformational leadership is at its core innovative, not only is it a new and innovative way to lead but it also breeds innovation in its followers (Marshall, 2011). Transformational leaders see the world with a new vision and bring people together to discover new ways to solve old problems (Marshall, 2011). Transformational leaders allow for the creativity that it takes to create the innovation so badly needed in professional nursing (Marshall, 2011). Health and illness continue to evolve and change, and nurses need to follow suit in order to keep up. It is innovation that will keep professional nursing one step ahead and make for successful nurses and positive patient outcomes. Transformational leadership also requires risk taking. Transformational leaders are open to taking risks involved in encouraging change and transforming others (Marshall, 2011). In nursing, leaders are needed that will not only cultivate new ideas but also have to courage to use them and put them into practice (Marshall, 2011). It is the ability to take risks that leads to change, adaptation, and production (Marshall, 2011). In professional nursing new ideas must be tested for goodness of fit, and it is the transformational leaders ability to take risks that makes this possible (Marshall, 2011). Innovation and risk taking go hand in hand, innovation cannot be cultivated with out taking the risk to step outside of the norm, and innovation cannot be acted upon with out assuming the risk that failure may result.
