Literature Review
2.1 Overview:
In this chapter, I will give an overview about the relevant literature regarding transformational leadership and the evidence regarding its use within educational and organisational settings. The significance of literature review underlies its participation in increasing researcher 's understanding to the issue under investigation. Hart (1998) stated that reviewing the relevant literature helps the researcher to generate more ideas about the topic. Moreover, it enhances his knowledge to explore what has been done in previous studies and what were the key findings. In this project, most of the literature will draw on western literature, particularly, from USA and the UK because this style of leadership is originally started there and first applied in western discourses. He pointed out to the key ideas of such leadership because it is identified many matters namely social justice, emancipation and organisational power. Therefore, it is obvious for the advocates of TL theory that good leaders should be transformational because of the values and the morals which involve within the notion of this leadership. Moreover, TL theorists gave more attention not only to the “goodness” of leaders, but also for their effectiveness (Southworth, 1999:51).
There is no one specific definition of TL and it has given many different definitions. Burns (1978) presented that the term of transformational leadership requires specific elements such as moral and ethical behaviours of leadership. Based on Burns (1979) view, TL occurs “when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality” (pp.
