People want to work for and contribute to organizations that value them personally and respect their skill sets (Crowley, 2011). Inspirational leaders offer optimism, respect, and honesty, which translates to gaining the confidence and trust of others (Smith, 2011). Research has shown being cared for and valued is a far greater motivator than monetary compensation (Crowley, 2011). Although I have learned that transformational leadership will fail without some aspects of transactional leadership, I believe that transformational leadership has a greater impact on the nursing environment. After pursuing further research, I think the employment of transformational leadership can actually make it easier to meet the necessary objectives of transactional leadership. If nurses are empowered and encouraged, they are more likely to meet unit goals and impart excellent patient care. For example, if I know everyone on my floor is working towards meeting the same unit goals, there will be a stronger sense of teamwork and aspiration amongst us.
