Originally sent to this continent in search of a better life and religious freedom, Pilgrims and Puritans began to set up their new lives in Massachusetts in the 1600s. In the years to follow many more people arrived and set up settlements along the east coast of what is now America. Every colony had a different reason for being created, from freedom of religion to rich soil for farming, it was all about making themselves a better life. Although an ocean away they were still under British rule, they were treated unfairly and looked down upon. Angry colonist created rebel groups, like the Sons of Liberty, which fought against Britains tyranny. It got so bad that the colonist created their own army and fought against the British Army, we came out victorious. Although it sounds like a happy ending we had to overcome many more obstacles. Many events transformed these states from a newly independent country to a transcontinental nation, such as the Westward Expansion, the War of 1812 and most importantly our economies improvements. The War of 1812 alone proved that we were not as amateur of a nation as everyone thought. Without these deadly battles, the rest of the world would not have respected our policies and might have declared another war on us. On top of that we would not have survived on our own without the steps we took to improve our economy. The country would have been stuck in a permanent depression if our leaders didn 't take action. Expanding our nation westward was crucial for our success. We found new resources, had new ports for trade and didn’t face the question of overcrowding. Our nation would not be the same as it is today without the sacrifices that our people made over 230 years
