Transduction Pros

Decent Essays
Transduction is the process of how foreign DNA is transferred into a gene cell. An example is the viral transfer of DNA from one bacterium to another. After the gene cell's are multiplied the viruses assemble and remove a portion of the host cell's bacterial DNA. Transduction is one of the most common tool used by molecular biologist to introduce a foreign gene into a new host cell's genome. "Specialized Transduction".thefreedictionary.com N.p., 2017. While the new tool, transduction, has its benefits in using it, it also has a downfall that makes it dangerous in a sense. The risks for transduction is you never know what the virus contains or if there is an insertion of foreign genes it can cause harmful mutations

Cloning is a cell, cell product, or organism that is genetically identical to the unit or individual it is derived from. During the process of cloning, a piece of DNA is cut from its source with a restriction enzyme. Then, the DNA is put into a vector ( a DNA molecule used to transport genetic material into another cell). The vector is introduced to a host cell by the process called transformation, then the host cell copies the vector DNA with the original DNA; creating copies of the inserted DNA. After the DNA is done copying, it is then removed from the host cell and purified cell.…

And consequently, to understand gene expression is to understand why these mutations can have such grave effects on an individual. For DNA to direct cellular processes, it must be transcribed and translated, The AP Biology Curriculum Framework explains. It goes on to say that “the products of transcription and translation play an important role in determining metabolism, i.e. cellular activities and phenotypes.” So if “changes in a nucleotide sequence, if present in a protein-coding region, can change the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide” (AP Biology Curriculum Framework, p. 37), changes to these essential proteins prevents cellular activities from being performed. The field of gene therapy began due to knowing about mutations and their effects on gene expression.…

In this case, the biomedical issue described is the patient, Jesse Gelsinger, suffering from a genetic disorder called the Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency (OTC). Apparently, this disorder blocks the body’s ability to break down ammonia, which is found in the liver. The patient has been preventing further damage in his body by going on specialized drugs and maintaining a strict no protein diet. Early 1990s, the human gene therapy is currently being practiced, it’s an attempt to change the genetic make-up of the patient, in which, researchers will inject a virus with a genetic material that the patient need in order to break down ammonia. Jesse Gelsinger is the very first patient to undergo the human gene therapy, by means of inserting the gene through the bloodstream to the liver, which is very risky.…

In some cases, the DNA comes from a dead organism. When the cells have the ability to take up DNA from their environment, they are known to be competent. In a competent cell, the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane are altered to allow the DNA to go into the cell. This process can happen naturally in the environment or it artificially by manipulating the temperature and salt concentration of the medium. Since competent cells can accept DNA from any donor genome, competence and transformation are essential tools in recombinant DNA technology, known as genetic…

Alongside CRISPR-Cas9 in site specific genome editing are ZFNs and TALENs. ZFNs are a DNA-binding motif assembled as ββα that utilizes a roughly thirty amino acid protein with DNA recognizing amino acids at the alpha helix (Gaj, Gersbach, & Barbas, 2013). These groups of amino acids usually recognize DNA in segments of three. This does not present much specificity in a genome. Therefore multiple DNA-binding motifs need to be combined to create specificity and result in highly specific polypeptides of repeating zinc finger complexes that recognize nearly eighteen base pair lengths.…

The repetitions are then followed by segments of DNA from the host DNA strand. A simple version, CRISPR-Cas9, has been modified to edit genomes. By delivering the Cas9 with a synthetic guide RNA (gRNA) into a cell, the cell's genome can be cut at a desired location, allowing existing genes to be removed and/or new ones added. CRISPR-cas9 is like a tiny pair of scissors that scientists can control. Once the strand of DNA is split the cell recognizes that there is something wrong and it goes in to fix it.…

Researchers Maurice Kernan, David Cowan, and Charles Zuker used the scientific methods in their study of the transduction pathway of mechanoreception. Their research was mostly exploratory with a focus on building a theory for the molecular basis of mechanoreception. Extensive research has been done on the transduction pathways of the senses, such as scent and hearing, but very little has been found about the rapid pathway that is mechanoreception. This response is a vital part of an animal’s survival; it involves the mechanisms that respond to touch, contribute to coordination and the means that signal the body about its position. The researchers wanted to determine the mechanism behind this unspecified transduction pathway.…

In oncology, genetic construction aims to deliver a synthetic segment of nucleic acid to destroy or correct the mutated genes (McCarthy, and McCrudden). Through oncology identification of types of cancer is made possible and through this, it is possible to develop forms of treatment through genetic construction. Viruses are known to be highly efficient at delivering segments of their genetic material making them excellent delivery systems in the treatment of breast cancer. Current approaches use recombinant viruses which cannot replicate, require packaging cell lines to produce particles and are engineered to carry the desired gene (McCarthy, and McCrudden). Retroviral virus construction is an approach that characterizes vector integration to the host genomes.…

Gene therapy has been studied as a potential treatment for genetic disease since the 1980s. The goal of gene therapy is to help correct genetic disease by providing a functioning copy of the gene to make up for the genetic defect. In the laboratory a functioning copy of the gene is packaged into a lentiviral vector, this is a modified virus that acts as a transport vehicle for the functioning gene. The lentiviral vector delivers the functioning copy of the gene into stem cells taken from the individual. The gene is then inserted inside the DNA of these cells.…
