Clinicians are often faced with the challenge of making informed decisions amidst heated debates over the most effective treatment approaches for their patients. One of the most controversial topics for speech-language pathologists and a team of health care professionals dealing with parents who have different opinions about their child’s health care. The speech therapist would concentrate on the communication issues of the daughter. In particular, the daughter’s ability to communicate messages effectively to convey her wants and needs. The LPC would focus on the lack of communication of between the parents. The LPC and speech therapist would both focus on any adjustment issues the daughter may have following the accident.
These two above problems stem from a lack of communication. It appears that each parent complains to others about how the other parent interacts with their daughter, but not discussing this issue with each other. It also appears that each member of the professional team lacks communication about treatment, goals, scheduling and assessment. It should also be noted that the case study does not present with what the daughter wants. The daughter is almost of legal age and should have say on what her goals are.
Possible conflicts between the speech therapist and the LPC include the role of counseling. Both the LPC and speech therapist have counseling as a part of their scope of practice. The LPC and speech therapist need to be aware of where their domains overlap and the differences in counseling.
