However, the transcultural nursing theory appears to be the approach that most educational institutions are choosing to highlight cultural education. In Beyond Transculturalism: Critiques of Cultural Education in Nursing by Maureen Campesino, explores the implications of having varying approaches to teaching culture has hindered how nurses and students view and interact with cultures. She also argues that because there is a lack of dialogue between the differing perspectives, there has been a missed opportunity for advancement in cultural studies. In other words, nursing educational institutions are not sure how to go about teaching culture to students because the literature is split on what cultural education means. According to Campesino (2008), nursing education tends to focus on transcultural nursing because “of the professional value for inclusivity in education, practice and research that accounts for the health care needs of highly diverse populations” (p 298). As well as the multiculturalism found in the Western World, there is a need to be able to understand the different cultures that a nurse may encounter. However, it is the dialogue between transcultural nursing theory, and critical approaches will help enhance “understanding of foundational concepts and facilitate the development and further improvement of nursing education and practice within increasingly complex and global societies” (Campesino, 2008, p 299).
