ORIENTATION
In the town of Northwood, a small petrol station was combusted in a small explosion. Later details revealed that a lit match was thrown in a puddle of gasoline. As the fire spread, it hit the engine of a small car, causing a large explosion. Said explosion resulted in the death of two people: A store clerk who went outside to investigate, and the owner of the car, Aisha Holst. It is believed that the act of arson had been an accident, but later details confirmed it was a deliberate act of arson. Due to the location of video cameras, we were not able to immediately identify the culprit.
After talking to witnesses and reviewing video footage, we have come to two possible suspects. We are about to interrogate

Do you require a solicitor?

NICOLA:
Not presently.

OFFICER:
You are free to change that at any time. Now, we are here today because of an incident at a petrol station, not far from your current area of residence. What have you heard about this incident?

NICOLA:
Only what’s been revealed in the media. Someone caused an explosion, two people died…

OFFICER:
Right. Could you describe it the way you would to family or friends? In your own terms

NICOLA:
Well presumably someone lit a match, dropped it in some gasoline, caused an explosion and two people were killed in it.

OFFICER:
Why a match?

NICOLA:
Um…well…if it were a lighter, then you’d easily be able to trace DNA from it.

OFFICER:
Fair enough. Now, I’ve checked most media outlets and none of them mention an explosion. How did you know it was an explosion?

NICOLA:
Like you’ve mentioned, the petrol station isn’t- wasn’t- too far from where I live…I did hear it.

OFFICER:
Fair enough. Now, what were you doing the night of the incident?

NICOLA:
May I have the services of a solicitor now?

OFFICER:
Certainly.

GLITCH

OFFICER:
Okay. So currently, it is 20.55.00 Present is Miss Bray, Detective Phillip Smith and Miss Bray’s solicitor, Clare Pascoe. Can you spell your

NICOLA:
There was no relationship until that day. If she hadn’t, you know, burnt, I would have sworn she set this whole thing up to frame me.

OFFICER:
Just to clarify, can you repeat- in as much detail as you can remember- what you did on that day? In whole?

NICOLA:
It was a weekend, so I slept in till 9:30. As you do, you know? And then I got up, got changed, checked Twitter, messaged my friends…had coffee. Did my chores, cleaned my room. Then Aisha called me, and we fought. Mum told me I would be alone- this is like, two oclock now, okay- and I said that was fine. Said goodbye to her. Flicked on the tv- I can’t remember what show I watched. One of my friends was going through a breakup so I was supporting her- when I heard an explosion. I turned off the TV, and went to the window. I could see smoke but I didn’t want to get hurt, so I decided to make dinner. Then mum came home and explained what had happened.

OFFICER:
So you weren’t making dinner.
