Transcendental Leadership Mentoring

Improved Essays
In this article, Moerer-Urdahl and Creswell (2004) talk about using a specific type phenomenological approach called transcendental phenomenology for exploring “ripple effect” in a mentoring program for leadership. They believe that transcendental phenomenology represents a set of philosophical assumptions with regard how to organize and analyze phenomenological data. At the core of this specific approach is its systematic and structural way for gathering and dealing with the qualitative data. In the article, they identify steps necessary to do so. The relational leadership model that was taught to me in HDF 415 is one of my favorite models, because it involves knowing the individuals you are leading, and using that knowledge to empower them, and help them grow as a leader. I see this theory come out a lot on the North Woods Challenge course. When facilitating a retreat for the challenge course the leader must be inclusive of everyone, there will be people who’s’ biggest challenge is getting out of the car and into the mud, and there are others who will be trying to swing from tree to tree. The differences don’t stop there, but as always the leader must be respectful and inclusive towards all of those participating. The entire challenge course is process-oriented and is done to help the…

My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. My leadership model, as similar as it may be to that of Greenleaf's, came from home.…

The benefits of introducing reflective practice into the school culture are developing transcendental leadership, developing the spirituality of staff and creating a positive learning environment for students. While there are benefits, there are challenges to sustaining a culture at St. Paul’s such as the regular turnover of staff, the reluctance of some staff to engage and Transcendental leadership is a model of leadership that combines transactional and transformative models of leadership with spirituality, or a willingness to serve others. Like Nouwen’s movement between the stages of development, a Catholic school principal is called to move between transactional, transformative and transcendental, models of leadership. The benefits of…

One focus should be cost/benefit. We must remain cognizant of financial implications with any program development. Another important aspect is the effectiveness and efficiency of the program. We do not want to implement a program that is designed to fail or provides limited personnel development. The idea of a mentoring program is to provide leadership development for our personnel; not only should we develop personnel in leadership positions currently, but all personnel.…

I believe that the purpose of ILC is not to create new leaders, but to develop individuals who have leadership capabilities and foster a growth that matures them as people both inside and outside of leadership positions. Students in ILC already have leadership capabilities, since they are in ILV. Everyone had to apply for the village and was accepted, so everybody is already, to some extent, a leader. ILC helps students understand what leadership truly entails and fully realize the the power of potential and individual choice. It will prompt students to go out of their comfort zones and delve into new concepts and ideas.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
