According to “Transactional Nursing: A Book of Readings” by Pamela Brink and Judith Saunders, there are four stages of culture shock that are defined as follows (keep in mind that I’m paraphrasing). The honeymoon phase is the first phase of culture shock, it is when you accept the change and feel very optimistic towards it. Secondly, there is the disenchantment phase, which is where you feel disenchanted by the change as you may have guessed. A lot of the time you may skip the honeymoon phase and go straight to the disenchantment phase, you may also spend most of you tie here. Thirdly, there is the beginning resolution phase, this is where your mind starts working as you try to find a solution to you disenchantment. The decision is made that you want to function in your new situation, and you are accepting that it’s you that is going to have to change. So the opportunity to work at a used car dealership was very appealing to me. The job I was offered was the car porter position, where I was to help the dealership run as smooth as possible. I would run errands, swap out cars with our mechanics, body shops, and other vendors, and organise the lot and so on. It seemed perfect because I absolutely love to drive, it calms me when I experience anxiety and depression. So I accepted the offer, I would start work the next day. When I got there, everyone was nice and friendly, my co-workers were happy to meet me and always greeted me with a “Hey Christian!” or “What’s up man?” when I came in. In addition, my starting wage was very generous, I was pleased to hear it was well above minimum wage. I also got to drive a lot of different cars, my favorite being the Dodge Challenger we had, but driving Mercedes Benz and Lexus wasn’t so bad either. Life was so good in the honeymoon
