Normally when we hear about survival stories we think one of two things, “How did they do that,” or, “I could do that.” For any person to survive any challenge they must be tranquil, flexible, and knowledgeable. These traits can be seen the following texts; The most Dangerous Game, Castaway, Lost in Death Valley, Caught in a Colorado Snowstorm, and I’ve Been Homeless for SIx years. The base of any successful survivor is tranquility. In order to survive any challenge, people will need to be tranquil. Tranquility is important because when people are calm they can focus on what is important and plan on how to get out of their situation. Flexibility is important because stubbornness will get people dead, people need to be be able to adapt. Chuck had very little to work with. He opened up a few boxes that had washed away and used an ice skate as an axe and spear (Castaway). This helped him to survive because he could catch fish, crab, and to cut down coconuts. The girls from the article, “Lost in Death Valley,” were flexible by abandoning their broken down car and hiking to a camp. “They turned it on and to their utter joy, hot water gushed out,” (Kirsten, 8). Had they have not left the car, they probably would have died of dehydration. Brianna from the article, “I’ve been homeless for six years,” was kicked out of her home and house surfed for six years. “On nights she couldn’t crash on a friend’s couch or find a bed at a shelter, Brianna DeMaio has to sleep in a park…” (Cengage). Knowledge is essential because people understand what to do are more likely to survive and they can adapt faster. Rainsford had previous knowledge of huntis, “‘Your Burmese tiger pit has claimed one of my best dogs…” (Connell,14). Had Zaroff not had a dog, the game would have been over, but Zaroff had saved him for later. Donna had previous survival skills, “Donna learned survival skills when she was 8…” (Kristen, 9) If she hadn’t remembered these they probably wouldn’t have survived as long as they did.
