The fundamental approach under this view is that the best performing employees who made significant contribution to the organization are motivated by way of rewards while the underperforming employees will strive to achieve the same performance so that they also get the same rewards like their counterparts. In doing so, the nurse manager or leader assumes that by rewarding the best performers, the act, may spur the poor performers in their units to compete with their counterparts who are rewarded for best performance which would results in overall commitment and retention among the employees. The theory of transactional leadership lends credence to this belief as it states if leaders expects to impact improvement and commitments of their staff members, then they must apply the methods which recognize and rewards achievements and good performers in an organization (Gilitane, 2013). The theory emphasizes more on the powers of the leader or manager and asserts that under weak leadership, quality is diminished and thus followers must be alive to the fact of the consequences of the powers that the leader or manager has in his possession for rewarding good results (Gilitane, 2013). This approach is suited for my personal leadership style based on two perspectives. The first perspective concerns the observation that the nurses are humans and they too need both personal attention as well as their professional needs. In a literature review on the topic conducted by Ritter (2011) for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, the shortage of nurses has been a growing problem for an extended period of time, leaving the aging population without the nurses necessary for care (Ritter, 2011, p. 27-28). With this shortage present, it has also been studied that the retention rate of highly qualified nurses is directly correlated to the health of the work environment (Ritter, 2011, p. 30). Elements of a healthy work environment, as outlined in the article, include “collaborative practice culture, communication-rich culture, a culture of accountability, the presence of adequate numbers of qualified nurses, the presence of expert, competent, credible and visible leadership, shared decision-making at all levels, the encouragement of professional practice and continued growth/development, recognition of the value of nursing’s contribution, and recognition by nurses of the meaningful contribution to practice” (Ritter, 2011, p.…
