A lone gunman killed three people and wounded nine others in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. Police identify the man as John Russell Houser, a 59-year old with a criminal history. ourt records show a history of mental illness, erratic behavior from Houser. Police described the man as a “out-of-state drifter” and could not find a clear reason he targeted the particular movie theater and the romantic comedy Trainwreck. One possible reason is that Trainwreck is written by feminist comedian Amy Schumer. Houser was a radical Republican and made talk show appearances where he would call in and the moderators used his far-right wing beliefs to start a debate. This summer, mass shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Charleston, South Carolina have repeated the common trend of gun violence in the United States. In the vast majority of mass shootings, the killer has obtained the weapons legally. In the South, including Tennessee, South Carolina, and Louisiana, 38 percent say they have a gun in the home. Men above the age of 50 have the highest rate of gun ownership. A 2014 report from the FBI, studying active shooter incidents from 2000 to 2013 found that active shooter incidents have dramatically increased. The first half of the study had an average 6.4 active shootings per year compared to 16.4 active shooting incidents per year in the second half. Half of the 12 deadliest shootings in United States history have been in the past eight years. In 2011, a report found that the states with the strongest gun control laws have the lowest rate of gunrelated deaths and also did not find a link between a state’s rate of mental illness and gun violence. In an interview Friday with CNN, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal sidestepped the gun control debate, a hot topic in the election, saying “This is a time for healing. There will be a time for those
