TRAINING CAMP Once the athletes get to the city they’ll be spending the rest of their rookie year in, they will first go to the organization and learn what they will be doing for the next few months. The head coach and general manager will introduce them to the team, the playbooks, rivalries, and the culture. After doing so, they will be given gear for training camp and the regular season. In their off time they may study what the team is looking for out of them and start to connect with other players. Many rookies are given the challenge of taking out some of the vets for dinner on any given day. If they choose not to they will not be treated with the respect they want or deserve. This is where they start doing drills to prepare for the regular season. Coaches will work with the rookies to help them get more familiar with pro football. There is much more conditioning and drills than in college; it is a more complex system. Offense, defense, and special teams are on three different fields. Depending on how they do in the offseason will determine their spot they play during the regular season. Also, if they don’t perform well during training camp they may not even make the roster. There is a deadline after the preseason to determine who makes the team and who gets cut. In the preseason each team has a seventy-five-man roster, when the preseason is over the coaches decide who has performed the best and who has the potential to perform great. When the decision is made, the coaches go to the general manager to give their opinion on the players. Some rookies have already made the team unless they go unsigned after draft day. Rookies usually approach training camp with hard work and willingness to listen to what the vets have to say. If the relationship between the rookie and the rest of the organization is poor, then they will either live through a very tough season, or get
