Law enforcement faces many challenges each and every day depending on the situations they encounter. Dealing with victims can be a challenge because of the situation the victim has gone through, they may or may not have trust in the officer’s ability to help them. Earning the victims trust in a matter of minutes is crucial, so no matter how experienced an officer may be they can always learn more. Training is crucial to an officers daily job duties, and being able to execute their training flawlessly is crucial to their survival and a victim’s survival may also depend on the way an officer executes their training in a live situation. Jennifer constantly flirts with her customers in order to increase her amount in tips. Jennifer has started receiving gifts at work from a customer named John who comes in only on Jennifer’s shifts. Jennifer has noticed that when she is not at work and out running errands, she always seems to run into John. Lately Jennifer has noticed John has been watching her apartment from the park across the street every night when she gets home from work. Jennifer has now started receiving phone calls from John multiple times a day. Jennifer has no idea how John got her phone number or address. Jennifer notified the police and they have informed her that they spoke with John and he assured them he will leave Jennifer alone. But just to be safe the officer informed Jennifer to put a restraining order on John, this way he cannot go to her job or come near her home. Question 1: What type of scenario is this? It is recommended that the victim always be escorted to and from work to avoid being followed by customers from her job. It may also be recommended that Jennifer keep it professional at all times so that her customers do not get the wrong idea. If the victim still does not feel safe then it may be time to choose another career with a safer environment. There are many resources that law enforcement can use to assist them and the victim. Counseling and therapy groups are an option for the victim. There are also many programs out there that can help a person find another job (if the victim is no longer comfortable at their job). . Depending on the assistance the victim needs or request the assistance can be found in Victims Resources @ http://vcgcb.ca.gov/resources.aspx. Even though there was no physical harm done to Jennifer from John, his intentions are still unclear and not sure if there was a sexual nature to his stalking. John should have to register as a sexual predator, this way people are aware of his potential.
