Trail Symbolism

Decent Essays
The trail represented the path of life. All trails are different; varying in length, terrain, and ending destination. This symbol relates to the important theme of dreams or goals in life. Each character had a dream of their own, a goal that they wanted to achieve. For example, Curley’s wife wished to become an actress and George and Lennie wanted to buy the house with the rabbits and live off the land. In the journey of life, one must overcome obstacles to be able to continue. It is the same as if someone were walking on a trail. For instance, if someone were to meet a steep hill, they would have to climb it in order to continue on the path.

Cormic McCarthy's "The Road" is a broken down dejected post apocalyptic wasteland that is void of virtually all resources, yet one thing that the The Road was never wanting in is symbolism. However not all things that carry symbolic weight are tangible, such as the character's vernacular, with their constant almost vexing use of the word "okay" or The Man's employment of the phrase "carry the fire. In a bleak, monochromatic wasteland, a “banished sun circles the Earth like a grieving mother with a lamp” (32). For the inhabitants of this barren, post-apocalyptic world, man’s bravest feat is waking up in the morning—mornings that are met not with symphonic sparrows and songs of the world’s awakening, but with the all-encompassing reality of loss. Nights are “dark beyond darkness,” and the dawning of each new day promises a progressive descent into grey (1). Nature is an impoverished mother: unable to provide for her children or even for herself. Starvation is a constant state as vagabonds traverse the labyrinthine paths before them, knowing they are on the road to nowhere but trudging forward nonetheless.…
