The Trail of Tears was a terrible time when the natives were removed from their homes by force in the Eastern USA. They cried when mourning the losses of their loved ones, like us. But you couldn't even imagine how bad the conditions were a that time.
They also got bad diseases, endangering their lives. They lost family members quickly. In the winter they starved, and they only drank 2 cups of hot water, cornbread, and 1 turnip per day. The reason it's called the trail of tears is because is it was said that when the Native Americans cried, their tears dried up and turned into crystals by the waters, and on land it made a trail. Settlers that came feared the natives, this is what the government wanted, so they spread rumors to the newspapers and posters. The government also wanted native to be known as violent and inhuman, so new settlers would not be sorry when the natives were pushed out of their homes to be relocated.During the forced migration on the on the Trail of Tears Choctaw the Choctaw tribe lost 2,500 members of the tribe. The cause was: Harsh weather, Starvation, and Disease. The Cherokee tribe also lost 4,000 tribe members from the same causes, but on a positive note, nearly 15,000 choctaws made it to Oklahoma.
Overall, the Trail of Tears was a terrible time, but they overcame deaths, losses, and tears. Now, think about how scared you would be on the Trail of Tears, your parents dying, deadly diseases, starving in the winter, dying of hyperthermia in the winter. How would you survive?
The Trail of Tears leads through the present day states of, Alabama Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina.
