The Trail of Tears began with the removal of the Indians. When white settlers began to move westward, they ran into the Native Americans which were known as the Five Civilized Tribes. The Five Civilized Tribes were Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminoles. These tribes and civilizations had very much impressed missionaries in New England. President Monroe and President Adams had formed many treaties with the idea of the voluntary movement of these Indian tribes and wanted to move them west of the Mississippi River. Some Indians that were not full blood had agreed to sell their lands to the government, but others that were full blood were quite reluctant. In the early nineteenth century, women in America were denied the right to vote, denied the right to obtain a higher education, and were strictly associated with their husband on the social level. To expand on women’s rights, they were denied the right to own property, they cannot sue other people, and they cannot handle the possessions they earn. The stereotypical women at this time were to stay inside her home and work there. As time progressed, some movements gave women the right to work in public. In 1846, six women came together and petitioned at the state convention about women having equal rights with men. Earlier in the 1840s, a woman by the name of Lucy Stone was the first abolitionist that was very strict and set only on the subject of women’s rights. There were not very many rights women earned at this time. Although to name a couple, women won the right for married women to have the ability to own property, and they won the right to vote even though they didn’t really obtain the right to vote on the national level until the abolishment of slavery in 1920. The strength of each factory, or organ, was determined by the size of the depressions or bumps on a person’s skull.
