The Great Gatsby, a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes place in the United States during the roaring twenties.; With both prohibition and organized crime ruining the country, and the drastic differences between rich and poor, this book talks about them all. The story is a recount from a man named Nick, who met the infamous Great Gatsby. The story, however, has a tragic ending, with death and the destruction of relationships. Nick, reciting the incident, adds in as much detail as he can remember in order to tell a coherent story. So he tells us the story of how he watched three people die because of affairs and past love. Nick, following orders, took no action into what he was told to do and did not interact with other characters during tense situations, which makes him responsible for allowing tensions to escalate so dramatically and cause multiple deaths. Nick’s first event starts with Tom, Myrtle, Daisy and the McKees at a little get-together. Nick gets drunk for, what he says, “I have been drunk just twice in my life.” (33). Whilst at the party, Nick finds out Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, unknown to him if Daisy is informed, he chooses not to do anything about it. Gatsby almost totally willing to take the entire blame for the hit and run. “‘Then he killed her,’ said Wilson. His mouth dropped open suddenly.“ Nick witnessed Mr. Wilson discovered that Mr. Gatsby ‘killed’ (169). Watching, Nick doesn’t add anything, or doesn’t do anything, what he could’ve done is try to defuse the situation, stop Mr. Wilson from getting so exasperated about his cheating wife. Nick should 've done anything, he did not say a single word other than occasional observations about how angry and upset Mr. Wilson
