Due to the drought, the fields are bare and cropless. For several weeks, Wang Lung and his family manage to survive the famine off of a scarce amount of beans until one day, there is not one bite of food left. Sadly, Olan decides to sacrifice the loyal ox in order to keep the rest of the family alive. However, Wang Lung immediately refuses to eat his loyal companion who has helped him plow the lands. Then, Wang Lung’s uncle arrives at his doorstep and begs for a handful of corn and beans. Even though Wang Lung has hardly enough to feed his family, he still generously gives his uncle what he needs for the rest of the family. Once the rest of the village hears of this, they make assumptions that Wang Lung is wealthy and greedy. So they quickly rush to Wang Lung’s house to raid and steal precious food. Although he is also poor and starving, he allows them to keep whatever they find in his house(except for the farming equipment) because he has a new idea: moving to the South. In the fire wagon to the South, Wang Lung learns that he must beg in order to earn enough money for food and shelter. After begging and pulling rickshaws for months, Wang Lung realizes that no matter what there will always be starving people in a city where there are markets overflowing with food.
